The hub is not loose but I did find the retainer nut loose, still have room to tighten but its not gonna stop my rubbing problem,I think I'll need to change the hub and axle but is there a quick fix for now maybe some type of washer or shim to hold the hub out enough to stop the rubbing of the brake drum from the brake support plate.
I have the brake drum and brakes off, the brakes are worn but this shouldn't make the drum rub on the front of the support plate should it. thanks.

I have been using a .005 shim that will just go inside the 6 splines and run the full lenght of the splines will make most hubs begin to tighten when the nut is on the outer end of the axle.

The shim material must be a very hard material. Nothing like sheet metal or aluminum will work. It will just squeeze out.

The hub must be re-tightened several times in the first few hours of operation or it will soon be flopping around again.

It has been working for me lately.

I wish someone would come out with a replacement hub that is undersized so it would not require a new axle to fix a loose hub. They would go like hotcakes.

Zane can I put a couple of shims to pull the hub out so that I'll have plenty of room to tighten up the retainer nut, by the way the hub doesn't wobble at all seems to be tight I just can't get the brake drum from rubbing on the backing plate.
by the way this is a 1949 8n and my first new used tractor.

I'm assuming 8N as there isn't any hub retainer nut on teh earlier tractors.
I've heard shim stock (aka beverage can material, tho steel would work better in similar thickness) mashed in between hub and axle can work. I'm curious about the fact that it rubs only the front of the backing plate. That sounds like maybe it is bent a wee and a light adjustment with an impact micrometer might be called for.
Make sure ya use the US version, the metric hammers aren't calibrated correctly for this application.;-)
