Hey yall.My cousin who sets up computers for a university in Birmingham came to check my computer today.I have Windows ME and he frowned on it.I like it ok but he said he had some Windows XP (home edition) at work and they could not use them there, and he could get me one for about 20 dollars. My question is what is y'alls opinion of ME and XP and what is the weakness of the XP if any and would it be any improvement.Keep in mind I am a slow learner and easily confused, but pretty good at mind reading.I have to be to keep my marriage togather. Have a good Weekend everyone..R.M.In AL.

I've heard of some horror stories with Winders ME. I enjoyed some good years with Winders 98 SE. Recently purchased a new top of the line Dell computer with Winder XP. Love it! No crashes as of yet and no dreaded blue screens of death. I enjoy the speed at which it goes from pushing "on" button to desktop. Heck I use to be able to fix a sandwich when I turned on my old computer and waited for it to get to the desktop. Now I can't even take a leak when I turn my new one on. It's at the desktop before I reach the bathroom.

LOL,

Take care,
Tyman

Windows ME is the final version of the 9X kernel (core) that was Windows 95 and 98. Because of several factors, the 9X kernel was not as stable as the other Windows product based on the NT kernel (stands for New Technology), and by all accounts ME was rushed out the door before it was really ready. NT was built for the business world and is vastly more stable than the 9X. NT is the core for Windows 2000 as well. Windows XP is based on NT rather than 9X. I have worked with XP from the Whistler days (the code name for beta versions) and have consistently been impressed with XP. You need to keep some things in mind if you decide to move to XP:

  1. Make certain that your hardware is compatible with XP. Some hardware vendors (such as HP printers) did not write drivers for their products under XP.

  2. Make sure that you have LOTS of memory. Unlike Windows ME, XP can use all of the memory that you can throw at it. Stuff your computer with at least 256 megs of ram, more if you can afford it.

  3. Do a fresh installation, not an upgrade. Even Microsoft does not recommend an upgrade path. If you have an upgrade disk you are still OK, you can do a fresh installation with the upgrade disk.

  4. You will need to understand that XP is more like NT, and there is additional administration that needs to be done. The Management Console is pretty easy to understand, however if you have never been exposed to NT you should consider purchasing an instruction book (such as the For Dummies series) in order to work with XP effectively.

All that being said, I have found that XP is reliable, stable and very user friendly. I have several DOS apps that run in compatibility mode with no problems. If your hardware supports it, I would recommend the switch. Heck, if you cousin has legal copies for about 20 bucks, send 1 my way. I can always use another one...

Mike, >>>Do a fresh installation, not an upgrade. Even Microsoft does not recommend an upgrade path. If you have an upgrade disk you are still OK, you can do a fresh installation with the upgrade disk.<<<

I would strongly suggest an XP upgrade, I bought
the FULL Home Version and had nothing but "PAIN" in getting my "old" software/hardware operational. I run both XP and Win98 as some/alot of software is not yet supported.

Sorry Phil, but I have to disagree with you. As a consultant and technician, I have fixed too many "upgrade installations" to advise anyone otherwise. You can run your old software in compatability mode and it will work nearly 100% of the time. No matter how you do it, without a fresh installation the old OS will leave a lot of garbage behind including some viruses. If you are going to do it, why not do it right? My team has done somewhere close to 100 fresh installs of XP without an issue. As long as the hardware supports it, set some new partitions, format it fresh and load the new OS.

Mike, With an upgrade "YOU" get MS Support, with a full ver(oem)your on your own. XP has its own bugs and does not have an easy exit to DOS

I made the mistake of installing the full version on my existing HD and could not Un-install. Some of my software goes back to my GE/RCA days and it is not supported in XP. (I had stored most of my old software at my summer home and did not have originals for recovery) My cost to recover was >$800 and I am not yet whole. When i get my Acad-12 back maybe i will be happy.

If you have a full install.. buy a new HD and run both OS. I like XP but it does not run everything (not ever).

I just this week upgraded to XP from Me (which was nothing but TROUBLE). I like the fact that XP is based on NT, and I have used NT at work for many versions and have rarely had problems.

Hi R.M.

I put Windows ME on the computer I built and it was the worst money I'd spent. ME is the worst operating system there is, IMO. I had nothing but problems with it...always crashing and doing weird stuff. I got a copy of XP from work and I couldn't be happier. If you can get it for twenty bucks, go for it. You will be happy.

XP HE is great. And if you do have a problem, it saves you time. You see the Blue Screen Of Death for 2 seconds and it presses Ctrl+Alt+Del FOR YOU!

It is wonderful for drivers and cameras and networking. XP is finally a good WinDoze.

Hi R.M.
I have my own small business and bought a Dell about six months ago that came with ME. We had problems from the get go, locking up and lots more. Dell sent a tech to the office and ended up putting in a new hard drive. Didn't fix the problem. Some needed programs just wouldn't work. There is a computer repair company near me and I have gotten to know some of the folks there. One has his own tax service at home as his wife just got her CPA license. He told me that he uses XP Home Edition and it works great for him. I told him my problem and he recommended XP. We installed it about a month ago and so far, it is working great. I paid $99.00 + tax at Office Depo so $20.00 is a bargain. Good luck.
