In contemplation of rebuilding my 2N, I am faced with the decision, do I wont a "show or work" tractor. I am sure I can not have both. It seems that the mechcanical condition would be required for both.

But would it be worth it to pay for a fancy paint job and then working the tractor and scaring the paint job.

Perhaps I need two 2Ns, one for "show" and one for "work".

ALL RESPONSES ARE WELCOME.

I did an all out restoration on a 1955 640, after many $$$ and many hours I have a gorgeous old ford that will never see a day's work. It was out of the garage only 2 days this year, once for a washing and once for a parade. Went and got a nice old 1950 8N that now does the chores around here. I love 'em both, but had to sell my soul to the devil (my wife) to ever justify getting them. I think you can have a combo show/work tractor, but it would take a tremendous amount of work to keep it "show" quality. Also, people bring unrestored, working tractors to shows all the time, and to me they are every bit as interesting as the trailer queens. My 2 cents

The important thing is that you get yourself another tractor, for balance. Then you can decide what you want to do with 'em. (it's simple once you get the hang of it!)

I am fairly new to tractoring. Never thought that I needed one until I got one.
However, I have been into Jeep CJ's for about a decade and I have always wondered about the 'Show Boys'. $20,000+ into a rig that would never see its' intended use. I drive my rigs. If they can't get me there and back they get sold. If you can't drive it to work every weekday and play with it in the mud/snow/woods on the weekend, it is useless. Scratches are just battle sacrs. They give a rig character.

I guess I feel the same about my 8N. To me she is beautiful, scratches, dings, mixed paint and all. Sometimes I just pull her out and lean on her with a beer in my hand. She makes me look good.

But let me tell ya.
She is the most beautiful when she is working.
Henry built them to work. Who am I to argue with a pedigree like that???

IMHO...If ya need 2 tractors to be satisfied..so be it...Just don't make em both show rigs :-)

I can't tell you to get a show tractor, but if that helps you justify getting another one, then ok. Any reason to buy another N is fine in my book.

When I first got into this stuff, I faced the same dilemma. I "refurbished" my 46 2N. In doing this, I took care of all necessary mechanical issues first. So it runs great and everything works the way it should. Then I cleaned, scraped, sanded, primed and painted with attention to detail and it actually came out looking pretty good. But then, I said to myself, to keep it looking that good, I guess shouldn't use it, right? Well, to each his own so I rejected that notion and I use it for whatever it can help me with. Right now, it's got some mud on it, some horse manure on the tires, it's a little bit dusty, the carry-all has been on the back for about a month because it makes it handy and I know it doesn't look quite as good as it did the day we rolled it out of the shop after painting it. But when it's show time, I wash it thoroughly, load it on the trailer and go. It still gets lots of looks and comments and it's surprising the number of people who appreciate it because they can see that it's been refurbished but still shows signs of being used for what Henry intended it to be used for. Those guys who bring them in on trailers and take their shoes off so they don't scratch them when they unload?? I have no problem with that if that's what floats their boats. But I like to think that I have a nice looking tractor that I can drive, enjoy AND work with. My $.02. Hope everyone has a good weekend.

In the beginning you started by asking questions on how to fix this tractor? Now Do I want to make it a show tractor? And thoughts of two tractors.

Before buying the farm I attended many car shows with my 67 camaro rs.I finally got disgusted because it got to the point where all the trophy winners brought their cars in on enclosed trailers, unloaded them, dusted them off, showed them and at the end of the day loaded them back on.I came to the conclusion that if thats what it takes to put a trophy on a shelf than I wanted no part of it.I had much more fun, turn many more heads driving around town, enjoying my classic than I ever could of had looking at a trophy on a shelf. Please don't get me wrong,I'm constantly replacing parts, improving cosmetics trying to achieve a beatiful dependable tractor, but if I get pissed off because I scratched the paint while brushhoging I know I've gone to far.Different strokes for different folks the bottom line is to be happy and enjoy.
