Sleeves-.040 cast ?

Did ford use a .040 cast sleeve or is it a aftermarket deal? Serial # *8N 364725* that Should be .040 steel right? Rods are .010 and crank is .020 under, so I`m sure someone has in there before. Pete

Pete..... ..thin 0.040 steel sleeves, thicker 0.090 castiron sleeves. Castiron have better piston ring sealing charistics and are now the preferred. BUT you have to bore the early steelsleeve block out so castiron sleeves will fit. You can use the same piston in eather sleeve. Some machinests will try to bore a castiron sleeve for oversize rings, I personally think that is kind of foolish. You can mike the block to determine which sleeve to use after you take the worn sleeve out. I don't know anyway to remove a sleeve without distroying it. ..... ..Dell

Thanks Dell, you think some on has bored these cast iron sleeves to .040? I`m positive these are cast iron, and they mic .038. I carefully(mig with very low setting) welded a piece of angle iron to them and drove them out. As the weld cooled the cast shrank and cracked. Pete

Hey Dell -

Why do you consider it foolish to bore out cast sleeves? Is it the cost break between boring and replacing, or is it more than that? For instance, if you're going .030 over, you still have a lot of sleeve material there.

Getting ready for one or the other, I'd like to know your Nexpert reasons.

while your question wasn't directed to me, I think my experience is the answer, and yep, it's a matter of cost. Around here, NW Indiana, highly industrialized, machine shop work is expensive. A good local shop in my area can remove/replace a sleeve as cheap as boring out the sleeves. I think boring takes longer than sleeve removal/replacement. But that doesn't include the cost of the new sleeves. But then, if you bore out the sleeves, let's say .030 like you suggested, your into new pistons and the cost of those. Add the cost of renewing the rod bushings (because now you have new piston pins) and it is not really cost effective to bore the sleeves, at lease where I live. My $.02
