I have a '46 2N with an 8N motor. I know (believe) that it is a '46 because the date stamps on the rear axle housings are from April and June of '46. As far as I can tell, the engine has no serial number. I have scratched the paint off the spot where the serial number should be, and there is no number. The only numbers I can find are on the block near the starter. There is a little sheet metal tag with the id "N A2 1" held to the block with two little screws. Just below that, there is a rather large "8N-B 1" cast in the block vertically. The distributor is in the front. Anyone with ideas as to what I've got here?

From those numbers, you have a 51 8n engine that has been converted to a front mount distributor.A21 means Jan.2 1951.Hope this helps, don

I wonder if the guy bought a replacement engine that did not include a distributor, and then used the original 9N distributor. Would this work? Is it possible to identify the distributor?

The cam would have to be changed also. The side mount has a gear on the cam to drive the distributor.

This may be a stab in the dark, but any chance someone may have purchased a rebuilt motor and replaced the old one with it? I remember a discussion some time ago about a similar situation and it was determined that some rebuilders remove the original serial number and replace it with theirs.

I was told that the seller's father-in-law had replaced the engine some time ago, but I don't know where he got the replacement engine.
