I saw one made from a Ford 9" rear end.

You can get them at any number of implement dealers, I think around $350 is a reasonable expectation. I have a 9 inch auger on mine, and it goes through my rock-free soil like the hot knife through butter. But, oh man, are they dangerous, whether you're on the seat or not. It takes a good deal of practice to get a routine down, what with lack of live hydraulics, and don't let no one or nobody get too close.

And yes, getting the holes nice and vertical comes with practice too...!

Hi Guys,

This is something I'm very interested in getting for my new 8N. Who or what is TSC? I'm looking around trying to find some decent used implements for my 8N. But, it would seem that maybe the post hole digger should be something you'd want to purchase new(?). I have a zillion fence posts to drill this year, and I feel it would be a worthwhile investment. $300.00 is the lowest price I've seen so far for a new post hole digger. I'd like to check into that if somebody can direct me to TSC. Also, what happens when you're drilling fence posts, and you hit a rock? Can you just reverse it, and try again? I have lots of rocks out here, and I'm wondering how a post hole digger will do. I realize that it won't drill through rock, but will it reverse, allowing me to re-set it a few inches away, etc? I've never used one before. And by the way, good tip on safety! Gotta be careful with these puppies.

-Thanks, Bob

No reverse in the PTO.

Digging post holes is a lot like plowing snow--a little science and a lot of art. Practice is what it takes to get good at it.

If you have good digging teeth on the auger and if your soil only has an occasional rock you will learn the feel of obstructions and how to reduce speed to let the auger work past it. Sooner or later you will get it stuck and learn why you didn't throw away that smokey bear shovel.

Most important thing to know is these items are dangerous. Call dig safe or your local cable locators--free call lots of grief saved. Don't take the neighbors word for where the phone line is buried. Also don't even think about letting kids, pets, or barley pop any where near the operation.

Had one on a 9N when I was a kid on the farm. We used it all the time (bit of a knack to drilling a good vertical hole).

Put it away when a neighbor got wrapped up in one and it killed him.

Safety first.

Many years ago back home on the farm my brothers were drilling holes in the hard clay. One of them stood on the digger to add weight to make it dig better. His jacket got caught in the PTO shaft and it wound him up tight. Luckily the tractor was running at a slow speed and it killed the engine. He wasn't hurt, but was caught there with his feet straight up in the air.

TSC has them this week for $298.00 plus your auger will run about $100.00. I bought one last week and it works great.
