I have a manual posthole digger that has two 1/2-handles that overlap to make a single digging handle. It's really a single large handle that's been dissected, with each half bolted to each half of the digger jaws. Anyway, one handle broke and nobody around here has seen one of these before. I don't know the brand name, but they were popular 12-15 years ago. If anybody knows what I'm talking about and knows where to find a set of replacement handles, email me. Thanks

Find a hickory sapling the same diameter.
Cut it. Strip the bark. Shape to fit.
Split it with a bandsaw.
Let dry and attach.

Just a thought...

bg, it sounds like you are talking about "split-handles", at least that is what we call them at work. The ones we have are about 8 feet long, and the handles are like they were made from one piece of wood about 2 inches in diameter that was ripped down the center. We use them to clean out the holes before we set the pole. ( I work for an electric coop). They are made that way so you can work them in a deep hole. Most of the poles we set, require a 6 foot or deeper hole. Regular phd's just wouldn't work in a hole 6' x 16". I can check at work today for the source of the replacement handles that we get and post a message here tonite.

Bob..... ....as much as those ol' idiot sticks mean to you, you might want to hang'em on the barn wall with your other souvinours and bite the bullet and pop for new PHD's. My local old fashioned McLendon's Hdwr has bins of replacement handles for all sorts of tools but that would mean you'd need to go clean cross country to pacific northwest. ..... ....Dell
