Not quite done or PTO disengages under load

I thought I was ready to rock and roll with the N this season, but last night when I tried out the brush hog, I found the PTO lever disengages when the PTO is put under load. I held it in with my foot long enought to see the brush hog needs some work too. Also when I tried to tighten the friction on the position control, it busted off.

Anyone familiar with the PTO problem? Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Arne

Arne, there are a few possibilities. The teeth could be worn on the collar or countershaft, something could be keeping it fron engaging all the way, or the detent ball could be stuck and not holding. A more common cause is that the pto shaft itself is able to move in and out due to a missing snap ring in the housing or a bearing retainer collar has moved and the bearing on the pto shaft is not holding it in place. If the pto shaft can move in and out even a little bit it will disengage the gears when it does.

John,

Thank you very much! That makes perfect sense. I put a new seal in this tractor shortly after I got it. The original seal (it may have been the ORIGINAL seal) seemed like it was a thicker package. I could mic all the assembles and determine if there is excessive clearance. First I will go out and try to wiggle the shaft in and out. :-)

Thanks again,

Arne

Looking at the I&T FO manual (see figure FO129 page 86 in mine) It appears the only thing that holds the collar onto the counter shaft is the groove in the shift rail and ball detent. Why would this thing disengage, it looks like all straight cut gears to me. Boy, I sure hope the splines on the countershaft aren't worn. I really don't want to get that far into this thing. Has anyone tried to replace a shift rail / ball detent for this problem? Did you have to split the tractor as the manual says to?

Don B, are these parts available?

Thanks,

Arne
