1942 -2n its been here 2 years, haven't put the steel wheels on yet, so I drove it to coffee shop (it has sherman overdrive?), everything works good but gears are very noisey???

Just wait till you install the steel wheels and the gear noise will be much less of a concern.
I think my step up sherman whines pretty good in high 3rd. Do you have a front crank? ANy chance I could get a picture with dimensions? Thanks

As others have said, straight cut noisy gears are standard on 2N's and 9N's, but they get really noisy when you lose a tranny bearing.....best thing to do is find another N to compare with.

hi burt, i think sherman overdrives are just naturally noisy in high range. i have one in my 47 and when i did the rebuild/restore on the tractor i took apart the sherman and inspected it and found no wear. its still as noisy as ever now in overdrive.

That's the nature of straight cut gears...they were changed when the 8N came along, I think.
