Am just fixing a cracked block on my 48 8n. A couple of cracks on the left side of the motor around the frost plug. Is this the typical place for cracks or have you guys found any cracks on the right side in the valve spring area? Also what would be a good thin fluid to pour in the block before it is assembled to check it for more cracks? Thanks in advance. I appreciate all of the knowledge from this board. Rjohn

I have one kinda like yours but someone tried to weld it and it is so bad I am going to try to replace it.

The magnaflux is a good way or you could do a real shade tree pressure test by running three or four psi of air into the block and spraying it with soap and water.

It would be a real pain and you would need to seal the whole deck with something like an old inner tube under a 2" x ?" held down with some all-thread through the cylinders and some 2" x 4"s across the pain rail. You would then need a plate to block off the water pump with a nipple for the air hose and a good pressure regulater.

Sounds like a lot of work doesn't it!

That's about the only at home way I would know to do it.

Good luck,
Ken

If you have the block out and cleaned I would take it to a machine shop and have them mag it. then you will know what and where you have to repair. Just a thought
