After having the charge my battery before each use etc. I decided to take off my shiny new alternator and bring it down to the shop. Nothing on the machine --- Pulled a new 7127 out and boy did it respond! Wheeeee! We had AMPS of POWER!

Replaced it on my tractor - verified the wiring scheme, diode placement, and the clean, bright and tight and let it rip. BOOM! Starts up goes to 30+ then drops, drops, drops until it hovers around ~8A on the ammeter. Keep in mind that this battery was not very well charged at all so this maybe accurate.

If the system is working ok - where does the ammeter stay at usually when operating the tractor? Thanks for all of the help. Guess I got a back batch of refurbs or something. :-D

Glad to have all of my juice back on the ole' rig.

Andy!

Andy,

Mine 12 volts conversion does the same thing. Just after starting, the ampmeter pegs out - 30+. After a few seconds, it slowly drops down to about6-8 amps where it stays.

Andy, It depends on how your tractor is wired. The ammeter can be wired to show the total output of the altenator to the tractor or to show how much is going to the battery. I have mine wired to show the battery current flow and it jumps to approx 30 after start then drops to just about 0 once the start energy is restored to the battery. If it is wired to show the total altenator current to the tractor, it should show about 2-4 amps once the start energy is restored-this is what the ignition system requires. It should jump up for each light you turn on. With the way mine works, turning on a light deflects the pointer but it immediately returns to near 0. I prefer the way I have it wired because it gives me an indication of battery condition. If significant current keeps flowing to the battery a few minutes after starting, I know my battery is going south. If it is registering below 0, the altenator is not working. Just a personal preference.

Andy,
Mine stays just above center. Usually 2 to 4 amps.

Man!! It really bugs me when I buy a brand new part and it is bad, but three in a row!!

The current you will see on the ampmeter depends on several things, but you will see most variation depending on the charged condition of the battery. It may show full scale right after cranking, but should settle down pretty quickly. Mine shows about one to two amps when running. No lights or other accdessories. Eight amps sounds ok, if the battery is not fully charged, but it should go down as the battery charges up.
