Proofmeter problem

I installed a new proofmeter on my 51 8N about a month ago. I think it's broken, but I thought I would check info here before I jump to conclusions...

Since I installed it, it "lagged" as I started the engine. By that, I mean it doesn't read as the engine cranks and "catches up" to the engine about a second or two after it fires. Is that normal? It read correctly when running. (I checked it with an engine analyzer.)

Yesterday, it was fine when I started mowing. Later, I looked down and it was pegged all the way around the dial. Now, it reads about 600 RPM when the engine is off and as soon as you start the motor, it increases until it hits the stop at 0.

Has anyone seen this problem? Is there an adjustment I don't know about? Any advice before I take it off?

thanks,

Russ

Sounds like the hairspring may have broken or the shaft has come loose from the driven disc. I haven't had one of the aftermarket Proofmeters apart, but it should be similar to the originals.

Sounds like your cable may be screwedup, or was. take your cable off at the govenor and see if it turns easy.
