According to my I&T fo-4 manual and all the pictures I've seen, there should be a snap ring on the rear axle, just before the retaining nut.Mine doesnt have one, and I cant for the life of me get the axle nut off, to fix the leaking axle seal. Does anyone have a good picture they could post of what this area should look like ? Any suggestions on removing the retainer nut ? Does the snap ring pass through the retainer nut? I see from the archives where most folks just used a cheater bar and a lot of weight to get it broke loose from the 450 lbs of torque it's put on with. Any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated !

Those things can be aggravating. They are put on so tight.I had a cheater bar and still finally had to heat the nut to get it to loosen. You can do it with one of those small propane torches if you don't have the big one.Good luck..... ....R.M. In AL.

Brad,

I just finished replacing the seal on my 49 8N. I did not have the retainers on either of my axles. I cleaned the grease and dirt out of all of the holes in the axle nut and found the remains of a retainer in one. I lucked out and managed to get it out with a small pick.

I had no trouble at all remove the nut but a great deal of trouble getting the hub off. I backed the nut off a couple of turns and did many figure eights but the thing would not budge. I finally used a puller and a few plows from a hammer to get it to break loose. Be sure to leave the axle nut on when pulling the hub. When it comes loose it happens with the release of a lot of energy and you could get hurt.

One comment on the broken retainer problem. I understand that you can damage the threads on your axle if you try to remove the nut with a broken retainer in it.

Let me give you one other word of advice. When you reassemble the thing make sure you install the brake actuating rod before you put the backing plate back on along with everthing else. I know a very stupid owner of a 49 8N who finished replacing his leaking axle seal and was standing back admiring his completed work when he noticed the brake actuating rod leaning against the tractor. I assure you the axle hub does not come off any easier the second time around!

Brad, don't worry about the retainer. If you put a wrench on the nut the retainer will shear if it is there. Get a good fitting socket, a long cheater bar or a good impact wrench. Once you get the nut loose initially back it off a couple turns and drive the tractor 'til the hub comes loose.

Brad, on my 52 8N I have a "snap ring" that does pass through the axle nuts. Have you tried the cheeter bar on that nut?
