Ford 8N transmission

While shifting into 2nd today, the tranny seemed to lock up. Even when in neutral and I release the clutch the tractor tries to move forward some then stalls out from being bogged down. If you put it in any gear, it doesn't try to move at all. Through the fill hole, I always thought I saw gears churning away while running, even in nuetral, now they aren't.

Any ideas? Any solutions? I'm very new to 8Ns, actually, tractors in general. Thanks.

Had same problem. Dont do as I did. I got the roll back and winched it on. the tires skidded thru the dirt and when the rear wheels hit the truck bed some thing broke loose in side tranny and the tractor rolled up on to the truck easy. When I tore it apart I had a broken pilot shaft gear and also some other broken parts in the trans. I should have taken the cover off the trans and shifted it with a bar because it had been stuck in two gears at the same time. good luck.

Yeah, that's my thought, being in two gears at once. the shifter was locked in 2nd and wouldn't budge. Took cover off and I am able to move both shift bars(? whatever they are called) back and forth. Lined them both back up in center position and replaced shifter/cover. Shifter is now free, and will shift into each gear, but still no movement in gear. There's got to be something about the main shaft that doesn't rotate at all in neutral.

ps, problem the same in low gear or road gear.

Thanks for the warning about tow! That is another point, the wheels are locked up in any position, and towing would be dragging in along the ground, and in neutral, like I said, it tries to drive forward.

I have been reading your posting, and your situation is exactly as mine. Last week I backed into reverse and then put the tranny into 2nd gear. She locked up. I pulled the shifter cover off and put the transmision into neutral. It wasn't easy since it was in two gears at once. Once I freed up the tranny I noticed 2 teeth missing on 2nd gear main shaft and one on the counter shaft. I am contemplated on replacing the two gears or replacing the entire tranny with a remanufactured unit. How many hours did it take you to fix your tranny. What did you finally end up doing.

Regards,

Hector
