I AM THINKING ABOUT PURCHASING A 3 POINT PTO DRIVEN WOOD CHIPPER FOR MY 1950 8N. A CHIPPER/SHREDDER THAT WOULD TAKE UP TO 4-1/2". DO YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE OR RECOMMENDATIONS? THANKS. PHILIP

I run my own tree surgery business, "Aerial Access Tree Services", undertaking all aspects of arboriculture, forestry and environmental management. I've recently switched from a Transit Tip 190 with an Entech tow chipper, (onboard 35hp engine), to a Unimog U1000 with rear PTO and an 8" Scliesing chipper. The Mog's got full agricultural spec: front and rear PTO, hydraulics throughout, 3 point linkage, dual clutch, 3-way tipper! Brilliant machine, and the chipper's driven by the 100hp engine! The Premier is literally the 'Rolls-Royce' of wood chippers, particularly on the PTO. Simple, efficient, just forward and reverse control bar, NO electrics to louse things up as can happen PARTICULARLY if you have a 'No-stress' facility/feature on your chipper. I would recommend AGAINST the 'No-stress' as this option was really introduced to the wood chipper as a means to preventing the engine stalling on the ON BOARD tow chipper, so it really isn't an issue for the PTO driven machine. Also if you keep it simple then there's less to consider should you have to repair. The only electrics you truly need are to activate the rollers and to reset if you need to hit the stop bar.
Another good machine, PTO driven, but for a smaller hp engine, around 35-45hp, is the Gandini. You could check out their web-site for more info. Alternatively try Mason wood chippers, he's based in Hartlepool, England, and has an incredible range of secondhand/refurbished and brand new chippers for sale, and available to view on his site. The address is alan@masonwoodchippers.com and he'll be only too happy to help if you want to drop him an email.
I've only just started using PTO driven chippers but the advantages to a tow machine are thousandfold. I don't know how I managed before I had the set-up I own today! Hope that's been of some use. If you want any further help/advice give me a buzz and I'll see what I can do! Cheers thenj! Happy hunting! Gareth, Aerial Access..

Philip,

I have had one (a Merry Mac, from Northern Tool & Equip.) for about five years now. I like it well enough, but it only takes up to 3" wood. It also has a flail knife shredder section that is very handy for the smaller stuff, especially leaves. If I had it to do over again, however, I think I'd go for the Troy-Bilt self-feeding powered unit. That way, the tractor is freed up for hauling the chips (or whatever). I modified my chipper by adding a large oval tub below to catch the chips. I also bought a section of flexible exhaust pipe to divert the fumes AWAY from my lungs. The units work well enough, and now cost @ $1100-1200.

Ron I have a Sears (MTD I think) with a 5HP briggs, it is great, will only take smaller sticks 3" but grindes leaves up and speeds up the rotting process.
