My father-in-law has an early 40's N series and the shift stick tower is broken. He wants me to help him replace the trans top plate. Can anyone give me tips or advice on this project.

Ron, a short answer is "fix it". Slightly longer answer is "take it apart and fix it". Humor relieves stress but can create it if misused. That is misuse, sorry.
You really need a parts manual and service manual. Both are relatively cheap and can prevent time consuming and expensive OH DARN! or other explitives deleted.
Both are available from advertisers on this board, and a telephone call or e-mail away.
ps I ain't never ever done one...yet.
