One of US, swarmed and killed by wasps!
83 year old man. Sad!

>"His pleasure was getting out on his tractors and tooling around the house," Tom Wellner said. "He would work an hour or two at a time."

Got me worried,a bit.

LAZY MANS WAY TO KILL GROUND BEES!!!!!
Park a running push mower over the nest entrance. The sound brings them out and the blade kills them when they do. Then I follow up with spray or gas. I usually let the mower sit and run out of gas. works for me

*That's* the headline at my house. Last year I killed a nest of yellow jackets in my front yard. The colony was underground (of course) in layers about the size of a basketball. Wife is allergic, so I've gotten pretty skillful at eradication.

This week I've killed about 18 paper wasps starting nests on the eaves of the house (plus one in the mailbox) I smack 'em with my hand when I can, just to show them I am superior even without chemical weapons : )

Down here in Texas we also run into rattlesnake dens when we plow things up or clear land. Some carry sawed-off shotguns or pistols for that reason, although to me havin' a firearm on a tractor is more dangerous than the snakes.

Then too, we have "rattlesnake roundups" down here too and people plow them up and capture then for cooking and for making belts and hatbands.

Steve, where in Texas are you? I'm in McKinney (north of Dallas). Your right about loaded firearms on tractors. Although, I do sit on my turned off 2N with a .410 at night to use it to spot light rabbits in the garden from time to time. I have also driven my Dad's Deere with an unloaded rifle to the deer stand. Beats walking, but get a lot of razzing about the safety hazards of riding a deer through the woods during hunting season.

I saw a guy on TV who specialized in ground nest removal. He would wear a bee suit and antagonize the bees and then suck them up with a shop vac as they came out of the hole. I had a nest that I poured gas into several times before I finally killed it off. They stung the fire out of my dog.

I've been run off my tractor at least twice and also attacked while working in a garden. Those suckers really hurt. I managed to knock the tractor out of gear both times before bailing, but the potential is there for some real problems. Be careful out there.

It seems once a year we get a Yellow Jacket nest in the lawn in the same area. They make a hole like a mouse or mole hole and wear the grass off in front of it. I go out to it in the evening when they are all in and pour about a pint of gas in the hole and imediately cover it with a shovel full of damp heavy dirt and step it down tight. That seems to kill them off. But it seems we get another the next year in the same area. So far no problem but it is a yearly thing.

I was cutting up some fire wood once and this wasp kept buging me!! Then there was another one doing the same thing. I just kept cutting the wood and watching my cut then I relised that there was a Yellow Jacket Ground nest that got all mad with me running the saw! The swarm was realy coming out of the ground and getting all around me! I had to drop my saw and run for a long ways before they stopped following me. Mark H.

The same thing almost happened to my uncle years ago. He backed the tractor down the barn bridge and ran over a rock at the side and ground up a nest. They swarmed him, just got to the docter in time to put a hose down his throat before it swelled shut.
