I've seen danusers phd, at auction, go for $600-$1000 (N.Ill/S.Wis). I must have gotten lucky, got one out of the local paper for $300 w/a 9" auger. Prior owner had it for 1 year to install 40 ac. of posts. He bought a bobcat, didn't need it anymore. I've had it for over a year w/o problems. Cuts holes in clay real well. I haven't seen the one your talking about but this one, IMO, is built real well. It was a learning experience first time I used it..80)

I OWN A POST HOLE DIGGER FROM TSC, BOUGHT IT LAST FALL AND PUT UP ABOUT 75 FENCE POST. WORKS GREAT BEHIND AN 8N. THE WEIGHT OF THIS POST HOLE DIGGER IS ABOUT 200 POUNDS, HAS ABOUT A 6" RING GEAR, AND HAS A MAXIMUM INPUT OF 30 HP. MY GUESS IS THAT THE JOHN DEERE POST HOLE DIGGER IS AOUT 400 POUNDS, HAS ABOUT A 9" RING, AND PROBABLY HAS A MAXIMUM INPUT OF ABOUT 60 HP.

Guess you're just paying for the name with a JD. My $350 new post hole works fine.

For those considering a used p-hole (if you can find one), stay away from them unless you know the owner selling it. The gears wear out and you can't replace them for much than the cost of a new one. Half the people selling a used one want to get rid of it for this reason.

Don't know anything about the JD, but I bought a TSC PHD with 12" auger last year. Planted over 150 trees with it behind the NAA. It works great. My only problem with it is that it will leak oil from the head over time, so it needs to be topped off with gear lube ocassionally. Otherwise, I think they are a bargin for the price. My guess is that any job requiring a heavier-duty unit than the TSC PHD would probably be too much job for an N anyway.

I bought a post hole digger about 2 years ago from a local tractor dealer. It is a Lienbaugh (sp?) and I gave about $300 for it without augers. The augers run about $70-$100 each (best I remember).

I just dug 25 holes with my Lienbach Line PHD-9" auger and it worked great. Now if someone would build one with a reverser in the gear head, that would be worth twice the price or more. I was putting a fence in an area that I removed trees from last year-the roots were still there! A good sized pipe wrench and 5 feet of pipe work pretty good as a reverser but a handle that you could pull from the seat would be even better!

Alan,

If you want green and yellow you'll have to pay the price. When I got my 5' finish mower I looked at one at a NH dealer and he wanted 2400, I went over to Central Tractor and got one on sale for 900 and it was the exact same unit only painted red. I just didn't have to have blue, my red one works fine. The blue one was new and had been sitting for so long it had rust spots on it. Good luck.

It's that $950 green & yaller paint..... LOL!

The TSC price probably doesn't include the auger. However, the JD price is still outrageous. I've got a really nice Bush Hog brand PHD and 12" auger that was pricey, but it's heavy duty as all get out, and didn't run anywhere near what that JD one does.

fwiw..... .Ed
