My new to me 48 8N came with 13.6 - 26 tires. The rims don't have the loops but rather the disc is welded to the rim.Is this too much tire for this tractor ?These tires are in pretty good condition. They obviously came from a newer style tractor, right? The only use this tractor will see is pulling a box sraper.Replace them? Yes or no?

My uncler has an 8N he bought new. He was farming a little muck ground so he had the same tires installed. You need to be careful and not jerk on something or ram into a pile of dirt or you couls snap the pinion gear. My uncle has had it happen twice, once when he did it using his loader and oncw when a neighbor borrowed it to pull out his tractor without permission. The tires have too much traction in some conditions. Not bad for 50 yrs. Just don't abuse it

The 13.6-26 is the same as the 12-26 and that is the same diameter as the 11-28 most were equiped with as soon as the factory orignals were replaced, the only problem you would have is with them welded to the rim is that if you wanted to change the wheel tread you would be limited as to the settings you could get. They are proably a 6 ply tire off of a junk combine.

My 8N came with the same setup. I ruined one of the 13.6x28's and when I went to buy a new one it was twice the money as the 12.8x28. Take good care of those tires.

Rick, I have the same size tires on a Jubilee that I've owned and used for 20 years. My rims were custom made here in central FL by a dealer that specialized in grove tractors. (this was before they cut down the orange groves and planted trailer parks) They started with a stock wheel center disk, cut it in a lathe, widened a 26" offset rim by welding a 5" band in it, and then welded all the pieces together. This set up gave a 17" wide footprint in the sand and with pressure set right and the tire weighted, performed very well. I found this set up works exceptionally well with a box blade so long as you are not working a slipery surface. Soft dirt, hard dirt, sugar sand, they will bite very well. I am convinced I can pull more with this set up than with stock configuration N bar tread under most all but slippery conditions such as mud. If you are going to work mud get them off, they are worthless. It is possible that you could find an N running a little short on power when those tires get a real bite in sand and you have a full bite with the box blade.HTH

My comments about traction in mud apply only to sand or turf tread. Bar tread would work well.

Rick,

Your tractor will be just fine with those tires. Just say a silent prayer for the combine that gave its life so your 8N could live. Such is life!

Rick..... ..my 1952 8N has 14.9-24 rear tires on 13-24 six-loop rims instead of the original 10-28's or re-numbered 11.2-28's on 9-28 rims. The OD is the same.

Condition of the rear tires is more important than the size. Leave'em..... ....Dell

Those tires should work fine, as Dell suggests. If my calculations are correct, the diameter of the 14.9X24s is only two inches greater than the original 10x28s. It now has the diameter of old 11x28s (now called 12.4x28s), which were sometimes used as replacements for the originals. These wider, squater times may even have some advantages when pulling a box scraper. Mik

No. The only thing you are losing with larger diameter tires is a little gear in the rear end.
So your tractor may be the fastest 8n around.
