a 9n, with six volt system

the starter engages and turns the motor, however, when the engine starts to fire the bendix kicks out and the engine won't fire up. we replaced the bendix but the same think is happening. You can here the starter continue to spin after contact with the fly wheel has been lost.

any idea?????

btw, the starter button is bad so we jump the contacts with a screwdriver - if this matters

Thanks alex

Alex..... ....check your ignition timing. Remove the distributor from the block. (2 bolts). do the timing procedure per I&T FO-4, its pictures explain better'n words.

Even better is to use the newer and better clutch style starter drive just $5 more than old screw bendix which must be spotlessly clean, no oil or greese.

In the mean time, sometimes you can get the engine to start by getting the starter to turn the engine over first and THEN TURN ON the ignition switch..... ....Dell

The ford dealer sells a new spring and retainer clip. Sounds like the spring is weak
