Is it OK to use unleaded in one of these tractors? I just bought one of these and I don't know diddly about tractors. I intend to use it to mow about 7 acres of grass. It blows a cloud of blue smoke when you get on the gas but not otherwise. Just how bad a sign is that. I know most the time it's cheaper to just buy the oil than to rebuild it. Is that true with these tractors?

Howdy,

I was wondering.....Can't you fairly easily pop rings/bearings into an 8N without pulling the engine? In other words, can't you remove the oil pan, and head, and do the job that way? I just mention it because I think I read that somewhere. It would seem that if you could get away with that, it wouldn't be so drastic, ya know? However, the others will have to weigh in on this, as I am just a tractor newbie.

Answer is no. It isn't that easy. Get a Ford IT manual if you don't have one. Also this site and others offer overhaul videos for about $25 that really tell you what's involved and where problems occur.

You should perform dry and wet compression tests on your cylinders. You need at least 90 lb in each cylinder with no more than 10% difference.

Your tractor should be warm when you do these tests. "Wet" involves putting 1 tbsn of 30 wt oil in each cylinder. Significantly increased compression means rings; no change means valves (and possibly rings too).

In short, just replacing rings isn't something I think you should do. You'll have to get into her a lot more than you think and there's no better time to do it right.

Depends on what is "fairly easily" in your neck of the woods.

The engine and oil pan are structural members of the tractor. Front axle has to come out of the way; gas tank and hood ought to come off; easier to just split the tractor and put it on an engine stand.

Also, like most engine work something like "mission creap" takes over. Once you have the engine on a stand then you start thinking about rebuilding the oil pump; grinding valves; timing gears; etc. etc. etc.

I got a smokey N with mariginal compression on two cyls., lousy comp on one cyl, and excellent comp on the last. She leaks or burns a quart in maybe two hours. At that rate I can't justify a rebuild and, even though I'd like to tear into the engine, a repair most likely isn't justified. It would take 3-8 years to off-set the cost of the repair with the savings on oil.
I have plenty of power for my 5' rotory mower, grading, and pushing snow. She starts surprisingly well until the temp dips into the teens and then she gets a little difficult but she'll go.
I don't really wanna drive her around when it's that cold anyway.

You are living on borrowed time with that kind of compression disparity. In for a blown head gasket or worse. You must have a min of 90 lb in each cylinder and no more than 10% difference between highest and lowest. Sounds like you're way off those marks.

Oil won't solve you're problem. Did you also try a wet test?

Well...the ave is 90psi! #1 = 110 dry & 130 wet; #2 = 75 dry and bit more wet. :)
I get on her, she starts, she works, I shut here down, I put some oil in her, and I go take it easy. Guess it'll take a blown gasket to get me motivated.

No lead regular is ok for old ns, oil burning will cause fouled plugs , carbon build up among other problems, low compresion hard starting, low power, I would say an engine rebuild is in your near future ( You got bad rings ) S T P oil treatment might help some but I dont like any of this stuff, Good luck .
