'think I'm buying myself or getting into some more trouble again

Been thinking, and will be looking at another tractor project (3rd in as many years). Going to check into an 821 on Friday. Problem is that it's blowing it's coolant through rather fast, and hoping it's just a head gasket issue. Any thoughts about what to look or where to look if the head is cracked?

I kind of like this fun trouble stuff associated with these old pieces of iron. Still amused at my interest and growing passion for these old Fords.

And, an early Danuser blade is on the way to NH from Ohio today. It is a neat looking old blade with a hand crank wheel adjuster mounted on the top link portion of it. Maybe Ed Gooding can post a pic from his excellent archives.

Well, wish me luck tomorrow on the 821, but will have to sell the restored 850 to make room for it. The 821 has power steering, Ford step through loader, and other decent features. Definite step up from the 850. 9N'er

If it is a head crack, you probably wont be able to see it without pulling the head. If there is a history of real intense overheating, (Like a freshly inbstalled radiator might indicate) there is an excellent probablility the head cracked. Normal place to crack is between cyl 2 and 3. My 860 also had a split at the back of the head. THat was visible from the outside.
Hope it's a head gasket , but be prepared for a new head. $$$$Expensive. Cheaper to buy a whole motor than a new head casting.

Ditto on the $$$'s for the OHV heads!
Plus, all I can find listed at $450--$750 have NO valve components at all.

Check the PTO and 3 PT. They may be missing, unless they have been added later. Years ago, I had an 820. It was built especially for a backhoe, and had a heavier front axle for the loader.

I think the '2' in the model means no PTO or internal hydraulics.

Keep the 850.

821 was the economy model that's fer sure. but this one had the 3pth installed at later date and pto. Also, comes with the Elenco 4WD with PS, and a loader that seems to be good. but won't know anything fer sure until tomorrow. If it's worth the effort to re-do another, and it's a head gasket problem only...MAY pick it up and bring it home. 9N'er

9N'er, what is the Elenco 4WD. Is itan aftermarket system? How does it get the power to the front wheels? Really curious.

This was an aftermarket FWD based on surplus Dodge Power Wagon front axles. It gets the power to the front by a drive shaft that runs off either a geared or chain-driven PTO that comes out of the left side inspection cover, where one would normally see the PTO selector handle.

JimpCO,

I cannot tell you a whole lot, but I suggest that you may want to post a note on this site asking such a question or the Ford site next door. Zane and others' here can tell you more than I can. But, here's what little know:

Elenco was a company formed by three men (two have passed on, and one of the original inventor/owners is still with us) designed an aftrmarket front wheel/4WD drive system for the 100 series tractors. Tony Jacobs, in Massachusetts, a frequent contributor to the Ford discusion forum now owns the company after purchasing it fromt he lone surviving owner.

He sells parts and deals in these old 4WD drive systems. If I have it right, ony or about 10,000 of these Fords have an Elenco on instaled on them...don't know if it was a factory option or not.

How it is powered, I will learn tomorrow. It looks like a very large differential on the front axle and it can be switched to the on, or on demand mode when necessary. Turning radius is about 15-20 feet. UGH. But, from what little I know, it just requires getting used to and it's like driving a big ol' 4WD big-a _ _ pickup truck. For my hilly area, snowplowing, log skidding up and down hills, and the uniqueness of such a beast it get's me to thinking it may be something to pursue after-all.

You can see a picture in the photo ads of this site. That's the tractor I will visit tomorrow.

It's a good question...wish I could tell you more. 9N'er

Only drawback to the Elenco is they do not turn on a dime. Or a quarter. Or a large football field..;-)
If you don't need the tight manueverability of your 860 it's a real neat toy!
Good luck!

Do you think it could turn within an acre...assuming there isn't a tree in the middle of the acre? :) ?

Well, that would depend on whether there's a spot of ice somewhere in the middle of the field. Makes setting up for a Dukes of Hazzard bootleg turn much easier..
Any luck on the CM Hall hunt yet?
