My grandfather has a 8N, which I installed points, plugs, condenser in the other day.My question is, is there any kind or timing mark and were is it located. Also can you use a timing light that is used on a 12volt system to time a 6volt.
Thanks for any advice.

OR..... ....what bg sez for the sidemount distributor..... unless you have the frontmount distributor inwhich case you must remove the frontmount distributor (2 bolts) and adjust it according to the pictures in the I&T FO-4 maintenance manual ($29 cheap)..... ..... Dell

Thanks for the heads up. I forgot that there is an adjustment for fronmount. I guess I'll remember after I have to do mine. Going to get my 48 started up in the next few days to see how it runs. Just have to install freeze plugs, flush the block, install carb kit and manifold, pressure wash, fill with oil, install---etc., etc.

Frontmount or sidemount distributer? Frontmount does not have timing adjustment. Sidemount has timing adjustment cover @ 2" behind manifold on the bellhousing. Your timing marks may be hard to find. Timing lights do not know the difference between 12v or 6 volt. HTH

on the timing light. If you have an inductive pickup with timing advance calibrator built in, I don't think it will work on a 6-volt. I know my old Sears 12-volt won't work on my 8N.

Mine's Penske (Sears & Roe). It doesn't say inductive. I can't say it's timed right, but it runs good.

The timing marks are on the flywheel. There is a little door on the front of the flywheel housing on the carburetor side of the tractor. You can use a 12 volt timing light if you use a 12-volt battery to power it, like by parking your truck next to it and hooking up the cables to it.

I used my timing light (old as it is) on my 6v and worked like it did on my 68 Malibu. That was in 74. I had a hard time finding the timing marks but that may have been my eyes. See ya.
