...why I'll never be rich.
Seeing the Dowden pedal go for $306 a couple days ago got me thinking. I bought my second 8N for $2,100. Wow!. Based on stuff I've seen in the last year on e-Bay, I could theoretically: • Sell the Dowden setup (complete with linkage!) for $306.
• Sell the Sherman OU unit for $813.
• Sell the rear work/tail light assembly for $300.
• Sell the front lights for $160.
• Sell the PTO extension for $60.
• Sell the script hood for $180.
• Sell the script fenders for $100 x 2. • Sell the Woods belly mower (haven't seen it on e-Bay, though) for at least $200.
And I'd end up with a free, functioning tractor, although looking a little stripped-down. Well ... maybe not. About the time I disassembled everything and listed it, the N market would collapse and I'd be left with a pile of parts. Plus I couldn't do that to a good mechanical friend o' mine. It was just a thought, but it does remind me to take good care of the old beast.

I'm glad you brought up the (neat stuff) on e-bay.I keep reading weird stories about these N parts and their quality.Seems I've read that a lot of these parts come from across the big pond.Do any of you have any advice to offer about them. This is my 1st try at trying to do a 46n or any tractor for that matter, and I would like to do the machine justice if I can. Thanks fellas!

I wonder what an OEM inductive loop ammeter is worth... Almost makes me want to take it off my work tractor and replace it with a modern two-terminal ammeter.

This kinda touches on something I've been wondering about. Hope there aren't a lot of perfectly good N's being parted out because they are worth more that way !!!

I restored a 38 JD-B five years ago and alot of parts came from tractors that where in better shape than the one I had. I believe though as the used parts become more scarce tractor values go up and companys build better reproduction parts. I'm now rebuilding a 9N and though costly I think the after market parts are great.

What's more concerning is that our N's may become more attractive to steal as a result of this stuff. VW Beetle owners have been dealing with this for a while now, as you can part them out for big bucks for folks wanting to restore Beetles from the 50's and 60's.

Sorry it would take more then one N Tractor on Ebay to supply the parts out there needed to keep them alive and fixed up. I have so many requests for parts I can't even fill them all. I even have a hard time getting them for my self and I could sell probly 5 Ferguson blocks and quite a few N-Blocks to people who have cracked theres. The more people restore them the more parts are needed to fix them. It is a endless circle. Mark H.

You're right, of course. In reality, I know I couldn't single-handedly affect the N parts market, but, the way my luck goes, who knows? Years ago I gathered lots of used '55-57 Chevy parts, knowing they were disappearing from scrap yards and the price was rising, even if serious rechroming was needed. So what happened? Shiny new aftermarket stuff showed up and now the parts I collected are barely worth what I paid for them. (Pssssst... hey buddy, want a slightly used '55 Chevy grill? I'll trade it for some N parts.) BTW, nice job on your N restoration, Mark. (Saw the photo a few days ago.)

I know I paid 54.00 for a dented, dirty, and rusty Snorkle top for my 9N and still had to buy the bottom and clamp for the cleaner. I have about 100.00 into the air cleaner and I had most of it. I have sold the complete setups for 50.00 to 125.00 befor and kick my self for doing it. It seems the after market parts don't fit as well as the original ones do. The 9N is worth more parted out then together, but it will be sold together and it was a good learning project just to stand back and say that looks nice and to be able to say you returned another one back into a good working tractor again. I am proud of the 9N since I have never restore a bigger tractor befor but it is a lot of work and I would not want to do this again soon, it takes a long time to get it right on the detail stuff. It would be nice to just take your time and do it slowly to enjoy it more. Mark H.
