Oh man, for those who are interested I looked at an 821 today with Elenco 4WD, power steering and a nice Ford FEL with a good size pump.

But I walked today.

Wants 5750.00 as-is. Wouldn't start. Said that a cylinder must be have water; the other day it chugged. Assuming head gasket is blown. But head was removed by previous owner and re-installed after cleaning. PERHAPS the previous owner reinstalled the old head gasket and it blew? Current owner said it was a good runner prior to the head gasket issue. Son in law was running it, it overheated, and then the blowing coolant trouble started.

So, I couldn't hear it, drive it, check the lifts and pumps etc. etc.

Tires in rear were weather checked and worn to about 50-55% but new rims.

Tin...straight.

Oil or seal leaks...the usual. With a lot of fluids around steering housing, but cylinder for FEL, powwer steering, valve and pushrod covers etc were ok...no apparent leaks that drew a lot of attention.

Consistent drip from radiator.

Front differential relatively clean.

Couldn't talk him to down to 5250. He doesn't have time to work on it to get it started, but was open to the idea of me driving 4 hours round trip to replace the head gasket and get it running for him and paying 5500.00 for what he paid for it.

He has a fella in WA state who is buying an 861D in nice shape from him, collects Ford, wants one of everything and is willing to meet him at 5750 to "fill a trailer" back to WA state.

He will know tonight if the WA state guy will purchase it or not.

So, here's the 64,000.00 dollar question: What would you have done?

9N'er..... ..... there's a lotta used $5000 FEL factory engineered 4WD, 40-50 hp diesel tractors out there that are running. Unfortuately, they're not redbellies.

AIN'T NO 40 year old non-running tractor worth more broken than running. Unless you just gotta havitts more than ya gotts smartts..... .....Dell

Did you know the tractor was not running? I would have not been inpressed with the guy If he did not bring that up during the sales pitch. Elencos are rare but they are out there .If you whant one the right one will come your way. You made the right call. Have you considerd a step through loader and half track combination for your 800?
The combination is equal if not better than a 4x4 all that power gets put right where you need it with the tracks. and you can turn on a dime using the brakes so you dont really need power steering.

I get some enjoyment out of selling vehicles a part at a time and so often evaluate a non-running tractor in terms of "what can I get for the parts that I see" just in case it will never run again. In your case, you have some fairly desireable parts there, but with Tony Jacobs seling Elenco parts (sorta kinda) new right in your own part of the country, it seems unlikely you would ever make back the $5750 by parting the thing out. Let the WA man have it if he wants it that bad. I probably wouldn't even have offered the $5250 but that's just me. You could put p/s on your 850 for a whole lot less than that.

He paid 5500.00 for it.

He wants 5750.00

It is in worse shape now than when he bought it...and wants more money for it.

Not sure I will spend my time and money to keep him from losing money. hmmmmm mmmmm mmmm..... .... 9N'er

Tom,

I agree with the rest of the fellers. A tractor that aint running isn't worth $5,750, loader or no loader. I can't believe he's selling it for more that he paid.

You'll find another with a better deal!!
Hang in there my friend.

Tyman

Bet he would have been real offended if you asked for thephone number of the mystery man who was willing to pay that for a tractor that didn't run.

The story you report sounds a lot like: pulled the head; figured out it was busted; slapped it back together and ran an ad.

What I do when I come across a story like this is I leave a business card with what I will pay written on it and you probably wouldn't be surprised how many calls I get about two weeks after the ad ran.

Your mileage may vary

I would not have walked - I'd have run. There is no way on Gods green earth that tractor is worth $3K let alone $5K. Hmmmm! Do I sound opinionated?? Our markets may be different but an 861 in good shape with good tires and a good loader would bring $4500 or so. Not running and no PTO or hydraulics would really cut the value.

Hi Tom: I can't break away that weekend tho I'd enjoy it. My oldest girl will be back home from Salt Lake City for that week and we'll have family over. Big doin's in town that weekend - the annual Cheesefest. I believe my 8N and 850 are both going to be in the parade on Sunday, but not firm on that yet. My grandson is going to be old enough to appreciate a parade - almost 3 by then and it should be a good time. We were up to Duluth and north shore last June for a week - a good time of year to go - I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself. TractorGut is from up that way and Ultradog and a few of the others from the neighborhood may be around. Unfortunately I can't be one of them. Now if your travels bring you through the balmy south of Minnesota on your way to the Norwegian Riviera, y'all stop by.
Regards - Paul

We have a saying around our office: We never lost money on a job we didn't get.

The deal you describe was not a pig in a poke, it was just a poke.

But keep dreaming.
