Ok. I have what I believe is a Sherman Step Up...but now I'm not sure. I just read a post and saw where Ed had posted an original Sherman advertisement.

Now, the ad described as pulling the Sherman shifter all the way back, towards the seat, to put the machine into 'Step Up'.

However, on mine, when I pull the lever back, I go slower than when I push it all way forward. I'm sure it isnt a combination up/ down, because it wont pull 'out' when in neutral to go into the factory gears. I believe it may be a step down...can anyone clear this up for me?

I see several of you guys really like your Sherman
step downs.
I'm curious. What for and when do you use it?
I can see it would be handy backing up to hook to an implement. What else?
I have a step up in my 2N that I like.
I use it to go Really Fast sometimes.
I also like it when I'm snow plowing or back blading. I'll run the tractor in first or second High with the engine about half throttle. Got good quick hydraulics without the engine roaring.
To Russ MO: No you probably wouldn't want to run either the stup or down shermans when you're bush hogging. Not enough power one way and not enough RPMs the other.

Any time you want power without speed.... Skidding a log or tugging on a stump come to mind, but for an 8N owner a slower reverse is the most often cited benefit.

I have a step-up. Generally the 2N is used to cut about 20 acres of grass. I really haven't used it. Should I be using it with the brush hog?
Thanks

Hello Russ, The way I've got this step-up figured is that you can run the same impliment at half-throttle rather than 3/4-throttle. That's because the Sherman steps-up the pto about 1 1/5 times. In other words, without the step-up you had to go to 3/4 throttle to get the pto to 530rpm and with the step-up 1/2 throttle will run the pto at 530rpm. Your ground speed will be the same.

Sounds like the step-down. The combo had a different looking shifter handle than the step-up or step-down. You can check Smith's site for pictures of both.

Can't resist this one... If you pull it back, put it in 4th, open it up and it almost scares you, it's an overdrive. If it does scare you, you are older than I think. If you feel like like you could get off an walk faster, it's an underdrive. I hope it is an underdrive - much more value both $$ and practicality.

You got that right! They really haul in 4th stepped up. I would really rather have a step down than a step up. Actually the step up / down would be way cool.

Right...Since Step Down third is slower than step down first, I'm going to try third gear...when I get it running again...lousy coil went out...
