I know that I read something before about not changing from non-detergent oil to 10w30 wt. I'm thinking about changing to detergent oil, but wander if it might cause some problems. I personally feel that a good detergent oil is much better even for this 60 year old machine. What say?

Detergent oil came out in the 1930's and manufacturers recommended it starting back then so it is unlikely that there was non detergent oil used ever since, only old timers born before then would recommend it because this was something new to them.

Ron, I have a 9N and have been using 10-30 for over 25 years in it,since it was overhauled and haven't had any problems. Oil pressure has maintained itself very good, always around the middle of the gauge or 3/4 up to the high end of the gauge. I use my tractor all winter long and it starts up very well, even during the below zero weather, that is after heating it up a little. If you haven't any problems up to the present, you shouldn't have any problems after switching to detergent oil. Good Luck.Ron

I wouldn't do it unless you are prepared for some down time. Reminds me of the time I added the gas treatment to my 8N gas tank and ended up having to pull my carb, and sprouted some leaks in my gas tank. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

I use Valvoline 5W30 in most everything these days including the 8N and 850. I have no oil pressure concerns and am quite comfortable that my engines are not suffering any harm. There are all kinds of opinions on the board and some will think me wrong. I figure I'm going to stop running long before my tractors do.... maybe I need some 'lubricant'.
