Just started reading you guys!! What a wealth of knowledge!! I recently purchased a 9-n. It had not run in years. It runs now. Sounds perfect for thirty seconds or so. Then major backfires. What's the answer? Wealth of knowledge. Many thanks!!

Hey Dell, Fast Ed,

You guys are truly awesome!! Thanks for taking the time to help out a rookie. Guess I was a little impatient. Followed thru with the MMO. Installed new sparkies and wires, along with new condensor. Basicly finished up the tune up I had started. She runs like a sewing machine now. Thanks again for the input. You guys are right on!!! 9-n Rookie.

Rookie..... .....many things cause backfires, from bad sparkies to sticky valves. A good tuneup is a place to start on a new-to-you tractor. Include in your tuneup, a compression check both dry then wet. My guess on your long time non-runner is you probably have low compression from sticky valves and/or rings. I like to recommend Marvel Mystery Oil as a help in cleaning off all the sticky varnish combustion by-products. MMO is one of the very few additives that work IMO.

Get an I&T FO-4 maintenance manual, readily available from sponsors of this fine N-Board, most tractor parts emporiums, Amazon.com, www.n-news.com which has a great archive of implement manuals, even available at Ford/New Holland, isn't that amaizing? $29 cheap. Getcha 1 and readitt..... ...respectfully, Dell

I ran across a simular back fire problem on a 600 last week. Here is what I found....customer had disassembled carb and installed points[cheap points],neither was correct.Carb fuel valve not seating or float not set correct causing gas to fill up carb, air tube, manifold and oil pan with gas.Cranking it over caused it to back fire with large plume of black smoke.Rebuilt carb, installed new good points and plugs and changed oil and filter. No more back fire.Hope this helps. don
