Farmall A on the WAY

Been a Ford man for awhile after restoring a 40 9N and 56 850, but wife and I decided (my idea) we needed a mower for our growing yard. We keep clearing, stuumping and seeding and our push mower would keep my busy for days.

Rather than the average Sears riding mower or similar, I said "dang it, if I am going to cut grass, then I am going to cut grass and do it on an antique Farmall Cub or A."

So, we 'got' one coming from an industrious young man (17 years old) who restored a 41 A and it's arriving from Buffalo to northern New Hampshire Thursday or Friday.

So, in three years time I went from tracotrless to three tractors, and I'm going to cut grass. Hated it growing up, vowed I would never own a home with a yard to mow, and now I'll be perched on a Farmall A smelling the sweet morning dew, freshly cut grass, and taking in the mountains and river.

Neighbors must think I'm nuts, but you know what, I might as well go out cutting grass with a smile on my face. tom

p.s. Anyone provide a recommendation for a good used belly mower? I think I need one now if I am going to cut grass.

My argument started 14 years ago, I really fought my wife on enlarging our yard. She told me that if I got her the tractor she wanted and let her lay out the lawn, that I would never have to mow lawn again. She wanted a Super A and I got her one. SHE now mowes a little over 5 acres with a woods L59 under it. The problem is that, unless it needs, fuel, oil, water, or repairs, I HAD BETTER KEEP MY GRUBBY FINGERS OFF HER TRACTOR.
Good luck and enjoy it. Ron/PA

Tommy: get you a Woods L59. You can find them through your state ag bulletin for as little as $300 and probably wont need anything but paint and maybe a belt. It may require bearings or casters. Renovating one is simple and worth the savings. The Woods L59 sells new for between $1300 and $1,600. The popular book "How to restore your Farm Tractor" features an "A" with Woods mower. It is beautiful. The book also features a 9n restoration, which I am sure you would appreciate. Good luck.

Hey you're right...I have the book...serendipitous (if I have the spelling correct). I restore a 9N and buy the book, now I acquire an A and have read the book...

maybe, someday, I should write a book...but right now, I have to find a mower with a beverage holder and cut grass with a smile on my face.

When we first moved here last year we did what everyone else does and went out and bought the Sears lawn tractor. What a mistake. Good thing we got a service contract with it. If I knew then what I knew now I'd go out and get a 40+ yr old real tractor like a Farmall.

Good luck with your "A".

Jon

You sound like me - I have a couple of 9Ns but I always wanted a Farmall A so I bought one about 9 months ago. The Farmall is not by any means the tractor the Ford is but so what. I love the looks, the color, and the sound. And, they are fun to drive! In addition you will learn a few new things about tractors which never hurt anyone. By the way, Krylon has a Farm Tractor and Implement spray paint which is an excellent reproduction of IH red (my opinion). Not too bright of a red. I think I got it at Ace Hardware. I can get the paint number for you if you are interested. Have fun!

9Ner, Is that the one advertised in Bargan Catergories? If so you were just a couple miles from this place. Should have given a holler.

:)

Story behind it: 17 year old boy needed an FFA project. Took on the Farmall A and did as nice a restoration on it as I have seen on a tractor. It's a beeeeauteee.

Came with restored cultivators and front snowplow blade/ et al.

Couldn't beat the price, it was like a no-brainer for me. Same or less than a riding mower.

And, it's on the way as we speak. Being picked up by a fella who was enroute to Buffalo, NY area, and throwing it on his load for a delivery Thursday or Friday.

And I'll tellya, trucking has come a long way. This fella was driving, talking to me on his cell phone, had laptop and FAX modem in his truck, and scans the hauling schedules section of this site. I placed an ad at 0800 at 10:00am he calls me at my desk, and last night, while enroute to NY from NC, we strike a deal coordinate the pickup, and I'll see it Thurs or Friday. Too weird.
