Two Ford N series appeared in front of local hardware for sale. Both come with attached brush hogs. One has clearly cast in front of rear axle housing 2N, the other isn't although both look the same. My question, wouldn't all 2N's have cast model and serial in the rear axle?

The easiest way to tell a 9n from most 2N's at a distance is a 9N had I beam radius arms where a 2N has oval tubular radius arms. However, this does not apply to 2N's made in 42 and 43, oval radius arms came out in 44. Also, 9N's had 4 spoke steering wheels, 2N's where 3 spoked.

I suppose, but I think the castings can break off. On my 2N, about half of the casting date on the starter housing is missing. Maybe an overzealous sandblaster got in the way?
