Is the transmission and rear end all one oil sump on this tractor. What kind of gear lube can I use in this? Is SAE 85-145 OK?

Also the lube in the trans is sorta milky like engine oil when it gets water in it. Can engine coolant get in the trans or is this just a sign it needs changed?

BTW thanks for the tip on the dip stick in the previous link. You guys are a lot more help than the factory or anyone else I've ask.

Dell's recommendation on oil is right on. Wrong oil can harm some stuff in there. Here in Midwest we will often see milky oil in the transmission and rear ends of tractors simply from condensation caused by cold steel and warm, moist air. A number of years of this will put a lot of water inside a tractor. Many old tractors have run for decades with the same oil in the trans, hydraulics and rear ends. Change it to new right stuff from New Holland. Mike

Richard..... .....NO...SAE 85-145 is NOT ok for your N-Tractor tranny/hydraulic/differential.

Milky tranny fluid is BAD NEWS. Water in oil, usually bad tranny shifter rubber boot. $3 cheap. Boil it in hot water to install.

Ford/New Holland now recommends spec: M2C-134D hydro/tranny fluid. 5 gals. 1 fill up by tranny shifter, 3-drains. Drain the sq diff plug first, then the 2" hex hydraulic, then 2" tranny. Of course, you could use the 65 yo original Ford 90 wt mineral oil, if you can find it. I don't..... ..... Dell

How about the engine oil? Any thing special about that. Can I use the same oil I use in the car, 10w30?

Yes, trany and hydraulic fluid is all in one - fill it next to the shifter.

See the linked article below for info on what to use.

Milky means water - look at your shifter boot - probably cracked.

Thanks for the save guys. Great article.

If I keep it inside except when using it do you think it would be OK to just change the fluid?

How hard is it to change out that seal on the PTO shaft?

water vapor can still find its way inside even if it is under cover - my recomendation would be to replace it.

Not hard to replace the PTO seal at all. Four bolts and a snap ring. Replace the collar that the seal rides on as well. I didn't and it did seal, but have to take it back out for another problem, so I ordered it. If you replace the seal with trans fluid in the tractor, park it facing down hill somehow so's it don't all leak out. :-)

replace the shift boot even if you store it inside. PTO seal is not hard to do if nothing is bent inside. If you replace seal clean 50 years of accumulated gunk out of the bottom of the sump.
