I have a '46 2N with the sherman trans operated with the cable and have heard the cables are impossible to find, mine works great now and I would like to keep it that way. Any suggestions like graphite or what to keep it lubed?

I've got the same Serman/Cable unit on my 8N, never had any trouble with "explosions". Excercise the same caution you'd use with any equipment, and you'll be fine.

If the cable still works, spray the outside casing frequently with a good penetrating oil. I don't like graphite as it doesn't penetrate well. The original sheath was just made up of wires wrapped around the control cable; there was no waterproof covering, which is why they didn't last long in the elements. However, frequent lubing with easily soak through and keep things working.

Do a site search here, someone not too long ago said they found a modern replacement cable. I think it was for a clutch or PTO. Good luck.

Try using white lithium grease in a spray can and spray it where the cable goes in the armor, also spray the outside with wd-40 often.

Humm,

I bet the cable could be replaced/retrofitted to a sealed cable mechanism.

Sounds like one of those odd 8N/2N combos. Humm.
I've heard that the tractors will actually explode when put into high gear with those cable actuated shermans.

I also have a '46 2N with a cable operated sherman. It happens to have an early 8N motor. I also live across the street from Bill in Orono, who happens to have hardwood floors being installed by Ultradog(you can't hide now...)

The strange comments from Bill and Ultradog stem from a case of mistaken identity. At least now I know that when my tractor explodes it will take Bill's 9N with it. (He is just jealous because I can zip around at high speed)

Thanks for clearing all that up about mistaken identities. We weren't trying to offend.
PS
You can test the Sherman this weekend. I'll be far away.

I've heard that when they do explode the shrapnel
will fly all the way across the road to your neighbors.
You should have him test it before you get the hardwood floors finished.
