I just got my coil for my Jubilee from my New Holland dealer I opened it before I left (from experience)only to find that the coil is stamped 12 volt....All the coil's I have are labeled 6 volt...The guy behind the counter proceeded to tell me that the one coil will cover both 6 and 12 volt applications and don't worry.....I know a little about electrical stuff and if it is a transformer with a certain amount of windings you will get different voltages out of the secondary....Am I missing something or is he correct...As usual any opinion appreciated...Alan

Alan..... ...its the same old story. The one size fits-all inventory scam.

Usually, there is a slip of paper someplace that sez: must use with resistor. Well guess what?, read between the lines. Its a real 6 volt coil that requires a 12-6 dropping resistor to use on a 12 volt system. And since I'm assuming your NAA is still 6 volts, I'd install it bare foot.

And yes you are correct about the turns ratio. Primary is about 100 turns and 2nd is about 10K turns. But you're compairing AC transformer theory to DC inductive reluctance. But since you really using the collasp of the magnetic field of the ignition core by opening the points to generate the sparkies high voltage, it becomes a self governing scheame. ..... ....Dell

I don't know Dell. I have both 6 and 12 volt coils, and the 12 volt coils don't have any such directions with them. As far as I know, you must have the right voltage coil that matches your system.

you're correct, but . . . Dell (WA)

Based upon Alan's original post..."The guy behind the counter proceeded to tell me that the one coil will cover both 6 and 12 volt applications and don't worry"...and knowing that there is such a universial 1-size fits all ignition coil being sold, I stand by my original remarks that there usually is a scrap of paper telling about the requirement of a 12-6 volt dropping resistor for 12 volt installation. Which implies that the universal ignition coil is really a 6 volt coil.

Unfortunately, there is no eazy shadetree mechanic test for designed coil operating voltages but you can kinda guess if the coil's primary winding is about 3 ohms, its a 6 volter and if its about 6 ohms, its a 12 volter. And of course, if its designed to be used with a ballast resistor, its got differnt resistances. So without having the ignition coil mfg specs, its hard to give definative advice. Leave alone the very technical problems of measuring low ohms.

Unfortunately, ignition coil manufacturers haven't found out about permanent lableing like paint, silkscreen or molded numbers. You get 'em in a box or throw-away bubble pack...dumb..... ....Dell

I know what you are saying. If you have a tractor that is 6 volt, they want to sell you the 12 volt coil and a voltage reducer.

To emphasize:
Don't make the mistake of assuming that because it says "12V" on a sticker that it means it doesn't need a resistor (even if there's no little slip of paper). I think you can guess how I found that one out...

Yeah, thats another thing. I know that the application is different, but there are coils that have built in resistors, or external. Both of them are 12 volt too, and are for a 12 volt application.
