We just got a small horse farm and guess what it came with! Somthing the seller called a 9N ? Um... I went to use it today and it started up ok, when I figured out how to get the PTO engaged for the bushhog on the back the thing bogged down when I tried to move? The blade spun well, fast smooth etc.. but when I tried to let the clutch out with both the blade on and the thing in 1st gear it would bog and get sluggish? I dont know if I am getting enough revs on it? I dont want to kill it with hi RPM, I had it wide open but it seems slow rpm wise to me. How can I crank up the throttle? The linkage dont go to the carb? It goes to somthing on the front of the engine?

It aint no V-Twin so I am screwed?

Alex, I'm almost embarrased to ask this, and please don't be insulted, but is the brake off?

No no, Jim of course not! Why would you ask such a question? You're asking a guy who stood under an apricot tree limb while I was sawing it off. (My loving wife stopped me before it was too late.) I also wish I had a nickel for every time I forgot to put the rotor back in before I put the distributor cap back on. Or used a chain for a top link when I first bought my mower. Things started happening fast when the front tip hit a small tree trunk and it just about came up vertical.
So why do you think I may have forgotten to release the brake?
Have a great weekend, Jim. I'm about to go out host a yard sale. One man's junk.....

Ah yes, the forgotten distributor rotor....I can relate. Everything is new, why won't it start? Speaking of junk, I was just handed a complete hood from some unknown tractor of ancient vintage. It's got to be either an AC or a Case (what's left of the paint is orange). As soon as I can get a photo posted I'm going to try to determine what it belongs to and then ebay here I come!

Thanks a bunch, I will check the govenor(spelling?). I think the engine has the rpm to spin the blade faster than it is rated, it just when a load is placed on it the rpm drops. So I would think that the gov may not be doing anything. I will start there
Thanks everybody I will be back!

Make sure you have an (ORC) Over Running Coupler between the PTO and the shaft. This will keep you from getting pushed by the mower when you push in the clutch. brush Hogs fling things, keep expensive objects like HD's and children away!

Alex, wide open throttle is only 2200+/-rpm. Wide open throttle is too fast for the PTO to operate safely. The pto is designed to run at 540 rpm which is around 1500 engine rpm. Adjust your throttle accordingly.
To get moving with the mower in gear there is nothing wrong with having the throttle at half and slip the clutch. You ain't going to burn it out.

Alex, There's a big difference between the accelerator on a car and a throttle on a tractor. Basically, you don't really accelerate a tractor, you set the throttle and go.
To get moving set the throttle half way down the quadrant and let out the clutch. If half is uncomfortable for you then a little less. Once you're moving then you will make a final adjustment of the throttle. Generally, you adjust the throttle and forget it until you come to a stop. Not like a car at all. Stop thinking of it as an accelerator and you'll get used to it.

Alex , On a tractor your linkage goes to a govener, which in your case sounds like its not working properly , ( It gives it more gas automaticly when it needs it ) You might check on the archives at the top of this page for a wealth of information , good luck .

Hey Alex, The thing on the front of the engine is a governor. It is so that you can set the throttle RPM at one place, and when the work load increases the governor increases the throttle to keep the RPM neat the same as you set. I use my 8N to mow all the time. I set my throttle full on and chose first gear. I don't know the RPM but its not like a V8, more like 4 or 5,000 RPM at best, I assume. This keeps the blades going fast, and the ground speed down so that the blades cut most efficiently, in my oppinion. I have mowed with an 8N for 40 years now.

Good luck.

Norman
