I want to build a line shaft in the shop some day, and in my search for flat belt things i found this ford tractor fan. The guy doesn't seem too sure of what he has.

If you are ever up in Canada , near Ottawa , I have a HUGE flat belt drill press that sure could use a good home . I had planned to convert it to V belt with a 2 hp electric , but have never gotten around to it . Dusty but in good shape . Bill

There was an old wood-working shop here for years that made and repaired tobacco trucks(little wooden wagons with wooden wheels). The whole shop ran on a line shaft. It closed down and was torn down and I've hunted all over for the line shaft and all the equipment and nobody knows what happened to it. Probably went to the scrap yard.

I am afraid you are right. I would like to have old lineshaft parts, But if i have to i will order new bearings and shafts. Hope to be able to find the right size old pulleys. I just want to turn my 1902 drill press, maybe an old lathe, a table saw, a grinding wheel/wire wheel, and maybe a ceiling fan. I have a 2 hp hit & miss and the belt pulley for the 2n, so turning it should not be a problem.

That is quite a unique belt pulley !

Good luck on the line shaft . My Dad's father had a wood and metal shop that he ran with line shafts using a waterwheel for power . My Mom's father had a woodshop that ran off line shafts and a huge Allis Chalmers electric motor . There is something special about the sound of the belts as they go around .

Good Luck,
Ford Man

You are right on the sound of the line shafts and flat belts. My grandfather owned a flour mill that had line shafts transmitting power throughout the mill. There was a shaft for each of three floors. Flat belts ran beside the stairways between floors. Before OSHA! The mill was originally powered by water but granddad converted it to a hit or miss Fairbanks Morse engine. The engine had the unmuffled exhaust piped outside the building. That was one sweet sound when he fired that thing up and sounded even better when the load was applied. I doubt if too many of us today have ever heard a hit or miss in 'full song'; It is not the chug-spit, drift-drift of a show engine, but a rythmetic bang, bang, bang. The sound of power! Everyone for a mile or so around could tell when Will was grinding flour. Ah, the memories of a youngster! The property was sold, the mill torn down, last I heard a collector in PA had the engine. I imagine the line shaft went to the scrap yard and the millstones are probably decorating someone's driveway. Ah, progress!
To make this legal for the N board I'll have to say granddad parked his Fordson in the lower floor of the mill beside the engine.

Sounds like a really cool place to have while growing up! I really like the part about the belts running in the stair wells! That worked for them because they were real people. We could not do it now because we would not want any of the yuppies to get hung up it the belts!
