I have a 9n, just copied list of serial #s to verify. (I will let you guys know year asap) I bought it for 1200 two years ago it came with a trim mower and a blade. It ran excellant then the ring gear(?) came loose from the pressure plate. I welded it and it has held ok but I did not have it ballanced do I need to? That was last year now it doesnt run at all wiring is in poor shape and I have a bad head gasket or crack because I have water in cyliders. I replaced head gasket, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points and rebuilt carb still no start and water in cylinder again. Keep in mind this was all last year. Now that I found this site I am ready to try again with your help. If WE can get it going I have a real hard question for you even my local ford tractor cener couldnt find the cause of this problem but it still cost me 470 bucks. I am an ASE certified mechanic or technician as they call it. I havent worked in the auto buisiness for 5 years though. I am no a journeymen Carpenter knowing this if there is anything I can do for you guys please let me know. Please be patient with me my tractor knowledge is minimal.

Rookie, Dell can be a bit rough, but, he's one of the most helpful people in this forum. Don't take it personally.

Rookie..... ..If you paid $470 bucks for engine work and it still doesn't start, I don't know who should be more embarressed, the payee or the incompetent stealer's mechanic.

Even a shadetree mechanic should be able to guess if you have water in the cylinders, you've at least got a bad headgasket and most likely a warped cylinderhead. Its not rocket science.

Good place to start is an I&T FO-4 manual. Readily available at sponsors of this great N-Board, most tractor parts emporiums, Amazon.com, www.n-news.com also has a great implement archive. Why even Ford/New Holland usually sells it, isn't that amazing? $29 cheap, gettcha 1 and readitt..... ..... respectfully, Dell

Perhaps my message was a bit confusing, the tractor ran when I took it in, I haven't posted the reason why I took it in and was charged 470 because I thought I threw enough questions on the board for one day. Also, I do have the repair manual and it has helped me very much, but I need advice from other 9n owners, that doesnt come with the $29. As for the $470 bill, one guy busted his knuckles on that tractor for 3 days, granted he couldnt fix it (labor x time = money) I was not embarassed to pay him.

Rookie..... .....I funked mindreading, just ask my exwife.

So far we've established you are a certified ASE mechanic that hasn't worked on automobiles for 5 years and you can't figgure out to get a 60 yr old tractor designed for horsefarmers to run.

We've also established that you have water in the cylinders and that you have thrown a lot of new parts at your tractor and it still doesn't run.

And we've also established that you took a running tractor into a tractor dealer and paid $470 for unspecified work and now the tractor doesn't run. And you don't know why.

Oh yes, we've also established that you have the I&T FO-4 manual.

What we haven't established is whether you have the triangle, Fuel, Ignition, Compression. We're not off to a good start here are we? Compression, water in cylinders, cylinder headgasket, fix it.
Ignition, does it cough on ether quick start? No?
fix your sparkies
Fuel, does it run on ether quickstart? yes?
its your self-rebuilt carb.

I'm outta ideas..... .....respectfully, Dell

Think we have also established the value of ASE certification.

I'm no ASE certified mechanic. Don't even play one on tv.

Sounds like you have at least three things going on here.

Water in the cylinders if you replaced the head gasket and did it right leads to the unfortunate conclusion of broken cast. If you are lucky could be the head. Might be worth a compression check to see where the break is. Used blocks are hard to come by so hope that isn't it.

Hope you welded the ring gear to the fly wheel and not the pressure plate. If so at the rpm's these things turn and if you didn't mud dobb it you ought to be all right although I would split the tractor and do it right if it were mine.

Won't start is something else again. If the starter turns it over then start by looking for fire at the plugs. If you have that then pull the carb drain and see if there is gas there. If those both check good and it still won't start then post again.

This was a test right?

Your mileage may vary
