Were they originally painted, or left natural? What color should they be painted on an 8N. The one I'm rebuilding looks like it might have been black at one time. The one on my tractor shows only very minor traces of red which could have been overspray. Should you paint it before assembly or afterwards? Sorry about all the ?'s.

at a local tractor show i noticed some of the carb paint jobs were kind of wrinkled. i think getting cleaned and free of gas and oil on the outside is the number one problem. some pretty good ideas listed here. gonna try a few in the future. especially liked the clear coat idea.

I don't know what was original, but I think they look nice cleaned up and clearcoated. This makes the cast body dark and the brass a good contrast. My oldest one I have done that way is in about its 4th year...still looking good.

I clean them up in the blasting cabinet before tearing them down.

To agree with Dell and expand on how it was done the carbs were painted on the engine as it was painted at the factory, air pipe, hoses, clamps and linkages were not yet installed. The carb air intake was taped.

Arthur..... ....most M/S carbs were painted at the same time the engine was at the factory. Remember, most spraybombs are not fuel proof paint. Usually looks better when you can't match the original color by painting contrasting color like black or silver. You can paint it anycolor you want as far as I am concerned. I think mine is "rust" (grin)..... ....Dell
