Im confused. I do not know alot about the N tractor but am very experianced with engines in general. Had the valves reworked and head gasket replaced. Tractor ran like a sewing machine while mowing the next time. The tractor has been sitting for about 1 week and now will not start. Has good compression, spark is there but looks kind of weak. There does not apear to be any fuel geting into the cylinders. This is a 50N with a front distributor. Does anyone have any ideas as to how a carb can just "quit". There is fuel in the fuel bowl, but as long as I have cranked it, there is nothing in the cylinders. The plugs are dry!.

I once had a problem with my '49 not starting, not getting fuel to the cylinders. Turned out that the carb had been rebuilt in the past and the solid brass needle valve had been replaced with a rubber tipped one. Apparently the dry gas I had added to the tank softened the rubber tip and caused it to stick. Replaced it with an original brass needle and have'nt had a problem since.

Thanks for the suggestions. I incorrectly stated this is a front mount distributor, it is really a side mount. Probably does not make alot of differance. There is fuel from the line out of the tank. The sight glass is flowing well and there is fuel to the inlet on the carb. Will try the inlet screen described in one of the follow ups. Thanks. Any other suggestions?

I assume you checked the filter in the top of the fuel bowl. Mine used to be prone to do this. The filter would get clogged easily with trash coming out of the tank. I finally broke down and cleaned the tank. There is also a filter in the bottom of the gas tank on mine. The filter in the tank on mine had a hole in it which let any rust or trash go straight to the filter above the bowl.

I have a front mount 49. You should have a nice blue spark.

You say you have fuel to the carb. Have you took the line loose at the carb elbow to see if you have fuel coming out of the line?

Ray, you just got some good advise about the starting fluid. You say you have gas in the carb, but it's not getting into the cylinders. How is the manifold. If it's leaking or if the carb is not fitting well to the manifold, then your loosing the vacume to suck the gas up and into the cylinders. Also, one of the gas filters generally overlooked is the screen where the gas line connects to the carb. Pull it out and clean it. If it had been running and just overhauled you shouldn't have valve problems, so can probably rule that out. I would also check the screen in the glass bowl and clean it and the bowl. Good luck.Ron

Ray,

Isolate whether it is gas or spark by trying a squirt of starting fluid. If it starts, it's gas. If it still doesn't start, it's spark.

I use el cheapo walmart carb cleaner..94 cents a can, and doesnt make that nasty knock if you use too much. I think it is gentler on things like rods and piston crowns, as it isn't quite as explosive as ether. It also does a halfway good job of cleaning out your carb throat and intake while you're trying to start ole Bessy...

Just my way of doing things, not necessarily the only or best..
