My lift will lft but as aoon as you let go of the lever it drops all the way down. There is some kocking in the pump. I have started to remove the inspection plate on the right side. There is a fair amount of discoloration in the oil (water). The question is while I was removing the side cover I was getting oil out of all the bolt holes except the top one.Is this normal or is it a indication of to much oil? If there is to much oil can this cause any of the lifting problems that I am having?

Mega-Dittos to what Dell said.

I don't think too much fluid will cause your problem. It can, however, cause brake problems with tranny fluid getting on the linings. Is it a 9/2N or 8N? The lift systems are different.

Also, if it is the quadrant control lever that is dropping down, there is a friction disk at the base of the lever where it enters the tranny that can be adjusted.

Rich..... ..sounds like you've got water in the tranny oil. Replace your rubber tranny shifter boot, $3 cheap. Boil it in hot water and slide it down the tranny lever and over the shifter tower while still hot.

Replace your contaminated hydraulic oil with 5 gals of Ford/New Holland recommended M2C-134D combo hydro oil. 3-drains, 1-fill up by tranny shifter. Drain the sq diffy plug first, then the 2" hydro drain, then the 2" tranny drain. And yes, those cotter keys are supposted to be there, Ford's high tech tranny drain hole "keep'em clear" scheme.

You may have other hydraulic issues, you're not too clear. But you can NEVER GO WRONG with starting at the basics, fresh clean hydro-oil..... ....Dell

Rich,
I agree with Mark. But some knocking in the pump is considered acceptable under load. From your discoloration comment, I think maybe you don't have to much oil. I think you have to much water in there with the oil. Your control lever should stay where you put it. Are you saying it moves down on it's own also?
I think I would begin by changing the trans/hyd. fluid, and then start troubleshooting the problem.

Take a look at your dip stick and the hole it goes in. Note where the tip would be when in, with the full mark is located in the case. You will find that you are way over filled. I would at least lower the fluid level to proper level and see if it still knocks. Sounds like it might even be coming out of the dip stick hole. Mark H.
