I own a 1950 8n w/ an auxillary 3 speed transmission. I have been told there were not many of these made. I hope someone could enlighten me on this. I am considering selling it and would also like to know what this option was called when it came out so I can list it as such. Thanks for any information.

Glad to see someone else out there uses a rubber strap as a battery hold down.

My 2N has a horn! I tried getting an old VW horn to work, but failing at that, I found this $3.00 japanese beauty on EBAY. My son diggs it a great deal, eventhough at half throttle you can barely hear it.

Never noticed the tool box on your previous pitcures. Maybe this is the first left side photo. If you recently added the tool box, where did you find it?

It is an original, but a bad fit. You see, the mounting tab is rusted off, so I added a couple of holes below the hinge and it still works. Since it is already butchered, I didn't mind one more hole for the horn.

Rob..... .....The optional dealer installed Sherman 3-speed aux tranny is probably in about 50% of all N-Tractors. It is highly desirable, probably adds about $250 to market value. Those that are trying to find a used one to put in their N-Tractor are paying $500+ for the privilege. Just like your 8N, Sherman's are no longer made.

I believe that the Sherman aux trannys were first introduced in 1940, just after they started production of N-Tractors. And continued production until about 1958. They first came as an overdrive, then underdrive and I think in 1948 as 3-speed. There was also a reverser tranny in about 1956 for forklift and front end loader operation.

And just incase someone asks, NO, the low range of the Sherman aux tranny does not make the N-Tractor a rototiller machine. Ground speed is still too high and PTO rpms are too low..... ...Dell

Can you post a picture or describe the location and function of the auxiliary transmission? Is it a Sherman over-direct-under or something else?

Thanks for the information about the aux transmission. Mine is on the left side just as the photo at the beginning of this subject is. The funny thing is I thought it was just a 2 speed for about 2 years until someone showed me the middle range.

I have a lever on the opposite side as this lever. WHAT does my lever do? I have never messed with is. I have only had the 8n for 3 weeks. THANKS bryguy.

Guy..... ...your shifting lever on the right side is most likely a "Hupp" dealer installed aux tranny. I really don't know much about them but they kinda work the same way as the more common Sherman's..... ..... Dell
