Have a 1952 8N that is one hard tractor to start.
It has been converted to 12v. I have replaced plugs, wires, points, condenser, dist cap, and coil. Have also switched the manifold and carburetor with one of my easier starting 8n's. So far, it is still a hard starter. Any ideas? The tractor is a strong runner once she gets going. Thanks, Rikiz

Rikiz..... ....hard to start is usually an ignition timing problem or a compression problem or a fuel problem.

Without knowing your compression readings (Ford spec: 90 psi min) and based upon your claim of "strong runner", I'd guess your compression was probably OK.

And since you claim exchanging carb and manifold with another eazy starting 8N without improving the starting, I'd guess the carb is ok BUT you haven't proved that the rest of your fuel system is OK.

Give it a squirt of ether quick-start. If it buzzes right off, sparkies are probably OK but still doesn't get the timing or fuel system off the question mark. If it doesn't buzz right off, probably confirms somesort of sparkie or timing problem..... ...Dell

I was wondering if perhaps the compression was too high, like from incorrect valve clearance or too tight ring end gap or something else wierd. With the 12 volt conversion, I'd more suspect the condensor, coil, or as I stated below, timing, and advance.

Have you checked compression? Does the engine spin over easily with the spark plugs removed? Have you checked the timing and advance mechanism?
Does your manifold have the tapped fitting for a vacuum gauge reading?
