8N wheel locks up

I have a 1948 8N. The right wheel locks up, acting like the brake has been applied. I can free it by driving in reverse for a few yards, but the condition is getting worse. I thought I had a brake problem, but I jacked it up and was about to remove the wheel, when I tried moving the wheel manually. It hits a definite stopping point with no noise or typical brake symptoms, and after that, I can turn the wheel only with difficulty. It moves in the reverse direction freely. Can anyone, based on this information, suggest what may be causing this and how I should proceed to fix it?

Thanks.

Phil..... ...you're on the right track. You're going to have to take the brake drum off because one of your brakeshoe pivot points has come loose.

Heres the deal, your brake shoes are a self-engerizing leading shoe design so that when slowing down in the foward direction, the leading shoe actually applies force to the trailing shoe much stronger than any footlever ever could. And helps to stop eazier. Since you're not going fast in reverse, you don't need or get that effect.

Bottomline, going to have to take 'er appart, you may have warn a spring catch of somesort. All parts needed to repair your 8N brakes are available. You need an I&T FO-4 manual, $29 cheap..... .....Dell

I've noticed I have the reverse problem in that some time when I back up, the right brake will drag. But they don't do it all the time? I can go to forward and roll the tractor a revolution or two and then back to reverse and all is fine.
