I finally after a week towed the '49 home and am ready to go to work on it. I pulled the pto and found a button like object in the casing I am assuming that it is a rivet head. The ring gear is loose and wobbly. Question can I pull the axle, housing and brake drum as a unit? I have good axle seals and do not want to disturb them if at all possible. I have a 2 ton cherry picker to hang and move the assembly on so weight should not be a problem.
Is the brake cam lever fastened inside the rearend housing? or does it just slide out with the trumpet.
And am I correct in thinking that it is the left trumpet as you are sitting on the tractor that has to be removed.

Pitch, also check the rear main casing while you have it apart. Mine was busted internally by the ring-gear bouncing around inside, but showed no damage externally. Look up at the cast iron webbing inside, above the pinion gear. Hope yours is ok.

Pitch..... ....sounds like you've got a good plan of action especially if you have an I&T FO-4 manual.

To answer your questions: yes, you can pull the whole lefthand axle asby and your diffy will come right out. And yes, your brake crossshaft is just socketed in the housing and slides right out.

Good luck on your diffy ring gear project. Lets hope your bearings are not chewed up..... ..Dell
