Hi everyone:

Doing some major dirt work this weekend and to my surprise, the rear wheel fell off. Could have been much worse. I searched and found the nut for the axle and the threads were not damaged. I was able to put the wheel back on with the help of my little lady who thought I had some kind of norwegian jack system going when I asked her to place the blocks under the tractor. My question. The nut has a grove on it and a spring key that looks like it should go in the holes on the axle. I don't think it was engaged into the little holes and would that be why the nut came off? I have the wheel back on now but am wondering about that spring retainer clip? Any thoughts out there.

Than

You're luck you weren't hurt when that happened. Think you'll find several holes in that nut which should allow one of them to line up for the spring retainer. Remember, that nut gets torqued down to 450 ft.lbs., so I don't really think that little retainer is really doing all that much in keeping the nut tight. I always found the left wheel had the most tendency to loosen up because of the forward travel against a right handed thread, but if you get them torqued down to 450 ft. lbs. I don't think you'll have much problems in the future.

I had the right rear wheel come off in 1984. I was on a gravel road and was in road gear (4th with Sherman in step up). I had (and still have) the Wagner loader mounted and I was pulling my hay wagon with building materials. My son was following me in my pickup.
I had just cut the throttle from wide open as I approached a stop sign and that is when it came off. If it had not been for the loader, I think I would have been thrown off.
We walked back a half mile looking for the nut and never found it. I had to borrow one from a neighbors tractor to get home, it was getting dark.
The groove in the nut is for the locking wire. One of the holes in the nut must line up with the groove in the axle. The wire locker is available.

If your hub and or axel shaft is wore out the nut tends to get loose easily. Extra washers are sometimes added to make up for a worn hub or shaft. My 52 8n had an extra washer on it. The hub and axel needed replaced. Had to keep a close watch on the nut. This must be a common problem. Saw 8n's at a local farm action with the axel nut welded on.
