My brother has a 55 gal drum of which has about 45 gals of diesel fuel in it, plus some water. The water got in because he didn't have the plug tight. Anyway, I told him the diesel fuel will rise to the top of the water, thus the water is on the bottom of the drum. He said different. Which is it? I told him to use it to burn the ditches, clean parts and fun stuff like that rather than take a chance in using it in his tractor. It is obvious that he hasn't had to drain a system and purge one....a pain in the butt. He said he would go with the Boards verdict. Thanks

The water will be at the bottom.Prove it to him by using two identical containers(pop bottles-soup cans).Pour the exact same amount of water and kerosene into their own container.Measure the weight of each. The water will have the larger weight which means it will have a grater Density and will go to the bottom.Hope this helps....indy

Diesel Fuel weighs approx. 7.5 pounds per gallon. Water weighs approx 8.5 pounds per gal.

I wouldn't be afraid to say that the water is on the bottom of the barrel. Years ago, we would use the diesel fuel without hesitation.

PS: Sorry, but I lost my server temporarily.

Trouble is, diesel fuel should sit 24 hrs., undisturbed, for the water to settle out. So, for engine fuel the diesel fuel might be too risky. Good for other stuff, though.

Sounds like your brother just became the proud owner of 45 gals of solvent/boyscouts water. Diesel fuel floats on water just like gasoline. All my diesel vehicles have water stop filters. Diesel also grows algie/moss that will also clog injectors. Start your burn pile with diesel, it doesn't "whoomph" like other accelerants..... ...Dell
