I have a 52 8n and would like to find a mower to cut oat hay with. Are there any mowers that an 8n can run? What should I look for, if I can find one. What would be a reasonable price? Thanks for any help... Paul

I got a Ford 515 with my tractor when I bought it 6 years ago, and it works well with my 8N. What they are worth?, another question. If you are looking for one I suggest getting one that is belt driven rather than a pitman arm. I use mine every year at my recreational property, total usage is only 1 1/2 hours a year, one thing about them though, KEEP EVERYONE COMPLETELY AWAY FROM THEM WHEN IN USE, INCLUDING DOGS, many a dog has lost a limb to these mowers. I have been looking for the same thing here in Illinois and Montana. I found a John Deere mower but they wanted $600 for it. Too much!!! I have not had a lot of luck finding a 501 but am still looking. Good luck.. I want one that will cut at an angle so I can get down along side the irrigation ditches.

Paul, Find yourself a good Ford 501 7' sickle mower. It is an excellent complement to your 52. If you get it set right and sharp you can mow hay with any tractor. You must have a good right brake for the corners. As Dell said when it's mowing right it is a thing of wonder. Not to many people are still cutting hay like that anymore. Mostly swathers. Even so, around here (N.E. Ks.) they are still bringing about $300.00-350.00. I have a 51 and it's cut many many acres of hay. Raked and little round baled. Good machines!

Paul..... ....your 8N makes an excellent sickle bar mowing machine. ANY rearmounted 3-point 6-8 ft sickle bar works well. If I had a choice of the older cutters, I'd probably choose a Ferguson over a Dearborn. Blades and stoneguards, and pitman arms are still available. Manuals from www.n-news.com archives. Getting them adjusted takes time. I love watching the mowed grass fold over the bar, its almost poetic.

I hate to give prices on anything, but I doubt that I'd give more than $250 for a good used sicklebar mower..... ....Dell
