Well guys - I think the old 2nd is working again . I put in new bushings in the distributor and reset timing and she is purring away. Ran her for 2 hours last night in the dark and 0 degree temps. The distributor shaft had 1/4 inch end play so the rotor cap was cutting a new grove in the distributor cap and barely making contact if at all with the contact plates in the distributor cap. would this condition have been temp/time sensitive? I still think I had a compound problem that began by frying the coil with the stupidity of putting in the *&^%$ 8 volt battery. Then I think I had problems with a poor batch of coils and finally the end play finally got so bad that contact was so poor that nothing worked right. Thanks to everyone that helped, especially CLAUS AND DELL AND PHILLIP. I am not a mechanic but in the past month I have experienced a great sense of accomplishment by tackling this problem and also repairing the governor. I wouldn't have been able to do it without the help of the board.

for the success update.....sometimes its the obscure and sometimes its the obvious and sometimes the words don't describe too well, but its the preserverance and education process. I am really pleased for you. Congrats..... .Dell
