Hi again:
A suggestion to those who are working on their 2n distributor shaft. My distributor had 1/4 inch end play and when I installed the new bushings I noticed that this tractor did not have a wick for oiling. The base of the distributor had 2 oil holes and a groove for oil where the shaft bushing sits. The old bushing had a small hole in it for allowing the oil to reach the shaft. All of the replacement bushings had no hole so one has to drill the small hole and align it so it sits over the oiling groove. Claus was right on about the spiral grove on the shaft being all gunked up. A sharp instrument is necessary to clean the spiral grooves of the shaft. Again, I am no mechanic but I sure am learning alot and that is what I appreciate about this board. Guys like Claus and Dell and Phillip and others that I have not mentioned, being unselfish and helpful to the rest of us who need lots of

One slight correction, the purpose of the wick is to lubricate the front (Top) bushing. There is a hole in front bearing surface on the shaft) (the type with the wick) to allow lubricant to exit and lubricate the bushing. How well this works I do not know...

It probably works just fine if people remember to oil it on a regular basis. In my 25 years as a mechanic I doubt I've seen 5 techs who would oil the wick when they changed points. How well does your Zippo work ( if you smoke) if you don't add lighter fluid? :)

The newer style aftermarket cam and weights assembly does not have the wick...but I agree with you. When one performs a tune-up, it is not much trouble to remove the cam and weights assembly and lube the front bushing. The rear bushing, if dry, also. While one is at it, it is a good time to check the springs on the weights assembly...
