I posted a question a couple of days ago about how to set the dwell on a front mounted distrubutor. The responses were were not encouraging but they did lead me to a solution. Dell told me that what was needed was to get a lead to the point side lead of the coil. So with that in mind I mounted the distributor and coil but left off the rotor and distributor cap, then alligator clipped a wire to the bolt that connects the condensor lead to the points and attached my dwell meter to that wire. Granted it won't run and give the dwell, but it does read dwell while it is being cranked. It takes just a few spins of the starter to get a steady reading. With the feeler gauge I got a dwell of 30 and the I&T book says 35 to 38. There is enough room to get a short screwdriver in there to loosen the points and adjust them and after two or three tries I was right on spec. You still have to remove the distributor to set the advance, but at least I knew the points were ok. I put all the parts on and 'ol Amy started on the first crank.

PS Until today I have only asked questions on this board and I want to thank everybody (Dell, Claus, etc.) who take their time and post answers giving us all free advice. Ya'll have saved me from much grief and foul language. Thank you.

Hi,
I was at a farm sale, once and found a "test" apparatus that the old farm maintenance man made for checking out distributors on the tractors around the farm. They had 4 N's. Each year they would do their "Spring" tune-ups. By removing the distributors from the tractors they would bolt it to a test board which had a starter from an old car mounted to spin the distributors.

I am not quite sure where we are goin' to find those kind of "field engineers" anymore. So, whenever I stumle into field engineering tools, I always try to pay respect to those fellows. Eventhough their names are not known. Always sign your WORK! Glad you got it goin. :})
