I let the tractor cool for ~45 minutes and it started right up. I resumed mowing and in less than 10 minutes it died very suddenly again. A quick inspection didn't reveal any obvious problems and since it restarted when cool and died when it got hot, I got to thinking about the possibility of a bad coil. This scenario seems to have occurred frequently on this board. Fortunately, I happened to have an old coil lying around that I didn't really know whether it was good or bad. I had replaced the coil several months ago when I had a starting problem after the tractor had set a couple of months. Lo and behold, the tractor started and I was able to finish my mowing job which took an hour or so. The sad thing about this story is that the bad coil had less than 15 hours on it before it went out. I had bought the coil at Farm and Country back in February as they were going out of business. At least I got it on sale.

I have had a similar problem and recently discovered that : while checking fluids before I start-up, I will add a little water to the radiator(for good measure I suppose). I will be running when mine will do the same. This time I found that the radiator had vented off at the cap and discharged small amount of water, through the vent drain hose. The hose is only 3 - 4 inches long and should be longer to keep radiator fluids off the coil and distibutor. I have noticed this the last two times it happened. I have not lost a coil yet but it could happen. It usually starts up again in about 30 minutes

Ron..... ....usually a frontmount that runs for about 15 minutes and quits is a bad ignition switch and if it quits after about 1 hr, its a bad ignition coil. I think I'd carry a jumper wire with alligator clippies to bypass the ignition switch the next time it "dies"..... ....Dell

But then --isn't it amazing how many times it is suggested that parts should be replaced on this board ----when there is nothing wrong with them ?

It looks like it happened again !

I can not speak for others Dell, but I can say that your free advice has always been spot-on for me. And I want to say thank you to you and all the other members of this message board for, at the very least, trying to help. I would have given up on my '46 2N long ago without the help I gleaned from this site.

Not to sound too maudlin, but repair advice is not all that is available here. The support and encouragement is an added bonus. When I got my 2N, I barely knew how to check the oil. A year and a half later, I did a sucessful brake job.

Thanks Dell. And next Steak Fry, make sure you pass on my thanks to all the others, okay?
